Where to stick ballasts/igniters/etc.

I bought an HID kit. I was browsing around and found a thread where an HID kit was installed but it was on a non projector type headlight. I have projector style but H11 bulbs.
I am trying to install my HID kit but the cavity is way too small for the igniters/ballasts/etc. I found a rubber plug that the factory harness goes through and was thinking of going to an auto part store or lowes and see if I can find rubber plugs roughly the same size and running the HID wires through the bottom of the headlight. Hope that makes sense...
Wondering what everybody else is doing? Pics would be fantastic!

I thought most HID kits came with the rubber grommet that is designed to plug the hole in the dust cap that needs to be drilled...are you talking about something different? I used zip ties to mount my ballasts along with the double sided tape as in my experience that stuff is prone to fail after time.

I will try to get pics for you. But yes I drilled a hole in the dust cover and then I used silicon around that to make sure it was sealed. Rather than just going with the double stick tape they included, I bought some 3M Velcro that was rated at like 20lbs or so. Just cut the sizes I needed and mounted them to the corresponding side of the engine bay.

To answer the first question I probably did receive plugs with the HID kit but it was installed on my 2016 taco which I got rid of. I took the HID kit out but either forgot the plugs, lost them or never had any to begin with. The Tacoma didn't have a sealed cavity like the 4Runner so I don't believe I used them.

I see what you are asking now. I didn't see or utilize that plug. I'm not sure how much slack you would have for everything to go where it needs to. Since my kit came with the rubber plug, I just did as many others did and drill a hold in the dust cover for the plug and seal it back up.

I would be interested if you can utilize the factory plug at the bottom. So if you go about it this way, I would love to know if it worked.

Hey - I know that you bought your HID's already but go to the Xenon Depot website or YouTube and watch the video's for the HID install for the 14+ 4 Runner. I watched them a couple of times and the installation of my 4 Runner (2016) only took about 15 minutes.

Thanks, I know how to install it as it came out of my Tacoma and have a pretty good technical background. I was more wondering if most people went through the grey cover or utilized the bottom plug and basically where everything was mounted. Sometimes these setups can be pretty messy with the igniters, ballasts, wires, plugs etc.

The Xenon Depot setup has a decent amount of wire between the bulbs and relays/ballasts to tuck them away. You can see the relay is 3M'd to the side of the wheel well here, but still looks pretty clean.

I got my kit from TRS (retrofit source). I put the ballasts in the same place where codyHTX did, but I mounted the relays brackets to a bolt around the batter tray. I didn't have to drill anywhere on the stock shield, the kit comes with a rubber plug that fit the bottom hole of the headlight housing.

From my post in the lighting thread:

Spent a little extra time on wire/part management. I tucked the ballast and connectors underneath the black skirt as XD recommends and zip-tied the wires to keep them close to the inside. It did require pulling excess wire slack out of the headlight housing until I couldn't pull any more out.

Zoomed in with plastic trim piece lifted to show where the wires are zip-tied. It was a little tricky to feed it through there, but it's possible.

I've got my ballasts, one on each inner fender well, "See below":




OPT-7 supplied velcro with the kit, but I've since zip-screwed them both into the fender panels!
