Which 4runner

I've narrowed my search down to two different 4runners. I found an original owner 2000 black sr5 sport 104000 miles with the e locker for 6200 obo or I found a 1998 limited for 4500 obo with 118000 miles. I want the sport with the e locker because I know it's kind of a rare 4runner but not sure I want to spend the extra 1000-1500.

If it were me, and not knowing anything more than your brief decription, I'd go with the first one without question. Here's why:

- e-lockers are hard to come by and not so easy (or cheap) to install after the fact
- painted bumpers look nicer
- slightly lower miles
- This one I'm not sure about, but I think the '00 and up 4wd systems are a bit more versatile. I.e., the 4-hi can be kept on pretty much constantly whereas the older models, the 4-hi wasn't meant for speeds over 45(?)mph.
- Slightly lower mileage (do either of them have a new timing belt?).


Can't go wrong with either, they're both good looking trucks!

If so I called on it and was interested. FYI it has had a strawberry milkshake problem. I has since been repaired but he has no documentation on the repair. Overall it seems like a good deal but I would beware. I am sure there are more people here who could help you determine if it is a good deal or not.

I haven't confirmed it yet but I'm pretty sure the other one has an e-locker too because it is a limited. I'll have to call him to confirm it.

I had to pay $9000 for my 00 Sport (71K miles)and that was after beating the guy up...he was aking $10,500. $6200 is a steal. I would go for the Sport.

Go with the one with less problems, no rust and has been better taken care of, don't worry about the year to year changes as much.

IMO, there is no question but to go with the sport. IF, you plan on modding this truck you will regret every day you didn't... Locker/nicer wheels/sport hood/2years newer/etc.......

BTW, that is a fair price!

The first one is beautiful, and thats the one I would go for, if it werent for the pink milkshake. I wouldnt completely eliminate it for that reason alone, but would need to get it checked out thoroughly first

I just noticed you mentioned that the first one is the original owner and *usually* that's a very good thing. I would definitely have that transmission looked at though.

I just called the guy and he really couldn't tell me much about it. He said something about the timing belt having to do with the transmission problem and he can't remember if they replaced the belt or not. He also said he couldn't remember if they replaced the transmission or if they just had it flushed. He wouldn't really budge on the price either, he said he would do $6000. I think I might get number 2. If not, the search continues.

If you are interested in 5 speeds, they are harder to find but they do completely eliminate the possiblitiy of pink milkshake, but you do have too look out for bad clutches, and less commonly bad synchros.

Id love to have a 5 speed but I can't find one I want to spend the money on. There's a 2000 with 144k miles on it that has a few dents in the body but he won't come off $4500 and its 5 hours away.

Definitely the sport. Newer, fewer miles, elocker and still a good price.

Oops didn't read the other posts first. I would have to convinced that everything is in order with history to prove it or I would keep looking. Mine never had the shake but one of the first things I did to it was go ahead and drop in a new radiator.
