Which Disc Brake Pads?

Right now I've been using EBC Green Stuff brake pads in my front discs, and I feel I'm just not getting the stopping power I need for off roading. They are wearing great, but just not what I thought they'd be.

I'm leaning towards a set of Hawk HPS, but just curious what the old time 4Runner guys have tried, and like.

Interesting. You all ready have a dual diaphragm booster, v6 calipers and the bigger master cylinder right? Not much left to cchange. Go with stainless braided front and rear lines to replace the rubber ones?

My '86 stops like like a boss. Only difference is I have rear discs.

That's what I get for posting after a shot or two of Maker's Mark.

I have 'GREEN' Stuff pads. Not the 'Yellow'. I fixed my OP.

Did you notice a significant difference going to the spiffy pads from what you had before? Cuz I'm with BBP, I'm upgrading the hardware components of my brakes before I worry about what name brand pads and rotors are better than others. I pressed Landcruiser rotors onto my hubs last night, and just as soon as I get dressed I'm gonna get to work installing V6 calipers and braided stainless lines to go with them. :)

I initially went with EBC Green Stuff due to the low dust associated with use. They are long wearing with no noticeable dust. However the trade off is - less gripping power.

Cryo treated slotted discs went with the pad replacement, and they work great - even when submerged in water/mud. It's just the pads that I'm unhappy with.

So I'm now in the market for replacement pads, and want something with more friction, but also would like minimal brake dust. Just trying to find a happy medium.

What'd you use? I'm plotting on using Mustang calipers so I can retain the factory ebrake, but I'm always interested in seeing other options. :)

I have the all-pro kit and tcase brake. Good kit never had any issues. If I would have waited, I'd have gone with the FROR full floater kit.

As I mentioned before, my post was erased for whatever reason, I use AutoZone brake pads. Not the ceramic but just plain old brake pads on my Runner and Tundra. No issues other than the Tundra brake rotors warp too often but I understand that's a problem in the 01's.

Once a month I spray them off at the carwash. When they wear out I trade them in on new ones.

After a lot of research, and sifting through a load of posts I've settled on a set of Hawk HPS Semi-Metallic pads for my front discs. I've already got Cryo slotted discs so we'll see how these pads work for me.

I'll post an after install (maybe some pics as well) report.

I was always told not to spray water on your rotors when they are hot, that increases the probability of warping. That said, my 01 LC rotors warped after 5 years or so. After replacing the fronts and the rears (they did need to be replaced), with drilled and slotted discs from Rotorworx, they have not warped yet.

Last year I replaced my factory (20 yrs old) rotors on my T4R with the same drilled and slotted discs. I've been tolerating my warp rotors for 9 years before replacing them.

I've been partial to Wagner ThermoQuiet pads on all my cars. FWIW, I have yet to replace my rear drum shoes, because they hardly wear out. I have a set of new shoes waiting for the day to replace them.

how are the toyota oem pads , are they any good , nobody mentioned them , just curious

i just did the brakes on mine and used the OEM pads, i'd rather do that than some autozone crap. resurfaced rotors and flushed all the lines with new fluid, cleaned up all the slide pins good. i just ordered new brake lines from marlin, hopefully gives the pedal a stiffer feel.

I've never had rotor problems on the Runner. The 01 tundras have a problem with their front brake systems. The front rotors and calipers are too small so they warp easily.
. I've heard there's a recall but my dealer says there is no such thing......
