which external cooler would be better??

debating between tru-cool 4454 and the b&m 70264. they both are about the same footprint just the b&m being 2x as thick. i live in az so for about 5-6 month its 100+ out here. read something as don't overcool your atf fluid. would tru-cool suit me out here or should i spring for the b&m 70264 since its rated higher. read many posts just want to get a straight answer. thanks

I wouldn't worry about overcooling your trans, especially in your area.

But the big question would be, what are you trying to cool?? (what engine/trans do you have)

The next question would be are you towing something? and if so how much weight?

ive got a v6 automatic in my 97 4runner. not really towing anything yet. just me, the wife and 3 lil boys and our stroller/gear/etc. so nothing major. if anything maybe in a year or so we would trailer a waverunner a few times a month.

That isn't enough to worry about. But if you still are, just about any aftermarket cooler would suffice.

I added a small one to my Trooper, but I use it to tow my 84 when I go play in the rocks.

In your area an aftermarket cooler is a good idea. I agree with fourwd1 mostly...

If it were me and I had a 3rd gen I might opt for the bigger/thicker one and eliminate the fluid flowing through the radiator. Some 3rd gen radiators tend to 'break' and allow trans fluid to mix with anti-freeze:wow2:

By using the thicker/larger cooler you can get two birds with one stone, better protection for the trans and eliminate the risk of the pink milkshake.

Absolutely bypass the stock cooler (in the radiator), the tranny line in the rad rupturing is possible in any vehicle.
