Which fluids for transfer case, front/rear diff change?

thats a nice link, wonder if the "gasket" numbers hold for all years, his is a 99. Mine a 2001.
also remeber seeing someplace a part # for the diff drain to switch it to a bolt head instead of a hex head.

If I'm not mistaken, both front and rear diffs and the transfer case drain and fill plugs share the same m18x1.5 thread. Earlier this fall when performing my 4runner's annual service I had the fill plug round out on me when checking the fill level, even with a Snap-On six point socket. It's inevitable, sooner or later they fail.

Anyway, I didn't like the dealer price for a replacement so I sourced a plug and gasket through Dorman. The plug has a much more substantial hex, and the gasket is made from a synthetic. Cost me less than $3 at my flaps. I don't see another problem with it in the future. Dorman #090-042.

I have never changed the transfer case fluids or the diff fluid since the ownership in 2011. I don't want to know how the fluid looks inside although I should change them soon.

Most of the vehicles on the road probably fall into this camp. I think it's mostly the enthusiast like us that frequent these boards that worry about such things. Especially using name brand synthetics and debating which one is better than the other. Lol

In 96Red for 400k mi I used conventional 75-90 in the 3 locations.
In 01 I have now 198k when purchased spotty maint records, did a fluid change using conventional 75-90.
With 01 regear and locker's install ECGS did gear setup warranty requires using conventional 85-140 for breakin period your choice after.
Lube change after breakin miles conventional 75-90 it works.

Per ECGS recommendations, I run Lucas 85w140 in my diffs.
