Got a 97 4cyl 4runner with 34" swampers, looking to change my front and rear 3rd member gears, was looking to get 5.29 ratio. my question is, will this be good or bad while im in low gears? dont care for how its gonna be in high gears being i only use it for off road. what will change? i dont have that much torque in second to get through mud and it kinda strugles, i always have to be in first, will this help me to get through in second? or will i still have to get through mud in first and now will go through slower? i dont want to be revving the crap out of it in first and be going so slow. would like to get the 5.29 because im getting a really good deal on it. anyone with a 4cyl have these gears?? thanks

if you have 5 speed then 5.29, 4 speed auto go with 4.88

first gear is gonna max out at high 20ish mph, craw ratio is gonna be 50ish to 1, at 65mpg your rpm in 5th gear is gonna be around 2800 rpm. but giving you have a 4banger you gonna need to be in higher rpm range to have some power.

Oo im sorry, i forgot to mention that i only care how it is in low gears, i only use my 4runner in the bush, in never see's pavement. sorry i feel stupid :der:

with 5.29 your 1st gear max out at like 7mph, 50.75 craw ratio is low enough IMO for a bush truck, if you talking about crawling big boulders then 100:1 is the way to go. anything lower than that in unnecessary

so 5.29 gears good or bad? id like to use my second to get through mud, right now it kinda struggles in second, will this help me in second? i dont mind going slower in first to get through boulders or other large obstacles, but through mud speed helps....or would 4.88 be better, or would it even make much of a difference between 4.88 and 5.29? sorry for all the stupid questions

for your need 5.29 sounds better. more options to play with, might even get to use 3rd gear in the bush.

Might even get to use 3rd gear!!! that gave me butterflies and almost an erection, but if itll help out my second gear id be more then happy. thanks a lot

5.29 and 34s will bring you back close to what it was stock.

For your setup, yes I would go with 5.29s.

Again, highway won't be too bad since you are running 34s.

Usually 4.88s are about right for 33s (offroad and on)
5.29s are about right for 35s (offroad and on)

5.29 and 34s is not stock, 4.56 and 33s is about stock, 4.88 with 35s is about stock.
