if you think you need some kind of treatment & not just an oil change, maybe you could use one of those products with a cheaper non syn, oil for 500 or so miles , or until you think its clean/problem solved, etc. then switch to the more exspensive syn stuff with whatever additive you want. like i said royal purple & z max work fine in my 06, but then again, i have not had it tested,

Good call on cleaning out the system. I actually did the same when I got my truck (used). I ran Valv. Synthetic in it for ~2000 miles and changed it out.

Over on ih8mud.com, Land Cruiser owners ran tests on Toyota oil that comes out after about 5k worth of driving. The analysis results were stellar.

Personally I'm sticking with Toyota b/c I get free oil changes for life.

So long as Im in warranty Ill be having a 5K OCI, but once its out for the powertrain Im probably going to go with the same for maybe 7500-10K. GIII or GIV doesnt really matter to me as my UOA's with Syntec really convinced me, to the point where I dont even think Ill try Amsoil. I had a 350Z that ran Syntec for 7500 mi which, based on UOA could easily have went 10 or 12K.

Ditto for the 3K/5K OCI jiffy lube propaganda BS. I only use syn because when Im on base I drive a lot of <1mi trips.

I thought the German Castrol was GV?

With my Urban Runner being only a few months old, I just went out and bought Mobil Clean 5000, 5W-30. I will use that for the first 10,000 miles or so. After that, I will use Pennzoil Platinum just as I did in my 06 Runner.

As for filters, I've always used either the larger Toyota filters, Purolator Premium Plus or Fram Tough Guard. Have never had a problem with any of those.

I changed the oil in mine shortly after purchasing it used for the simple reason that I had no idea what was in it.

I used 0W-30 Mobil one this time, but in the spring I'll put 5W30 Amsoil in it. I just didn't have time to shlep out to the local Amsoil dealer this time, but I wanted to get a synthetic in there.

My old Tacoma saw nothing but Amsoil since 1000mi, when I drained the factory fish oil out, and I never had a lick of trouble with that engine.

I've always used the factory filters, but Purolator makes a good product, too. might give that a try.

The only debate I have in my mind at this time is the wisdom of using some sort of cleaning product shortly before the next oil change, to remove accumulated sludge, etc. Since this 4Runner was purchased used @ 58K miles, I have to expect there is some build up. The questions are which if any product to use, and the risk of dislodging some piece of sludge from it's currently harmless location and it migrates to someplace where it blocks oil flow & does damage.

It seems like the more i read of this subject the more people i find run synthetic. I just changed the oil in my 05 last night.....first time ever changing on my own, so it took a while but the oil was pretty dark for only being in there 2500 miles or so.

So i kind of want to switch to synthetic but then after seeing the regular oil at 2500 miles makes me scared to go longer than that so i'm stuck.

I am a little bit in the same boat. I purchased my 04 4Runner in Nov. with 41,000 miles. I changed the oil right away to Mobil 1 and at 2,500 miles the oil is darker than the oil that needs changing after 5,000 miles of use in my 01 4Runner.

I don't think the car has been abused, but lets face it, a lot of people tend to not change the oil often. I think changing oil more often is one of the best things you can do to a engine. I have had mechanics tell me my old cars look quite clean inside, even though I use dino (non-synthetic) oil in my older cars. By brother in-law snapped up my Honda Accord wagon when I sold it in Nov. It had 225,000 miles. He knew it was taken care of.

I have asked about products to use to clean the engine and some people I have talked to say to use these products:

This kind of reminds me of snake oil, somewhat a magic potion. You do not use this with good synthetic oil, this is supposed to clean the engine over a short period of time.

For me, I usually change Mobil 1 every 5,000 miles. I think I will change the oil in the 04 after 3,500 miles then go around 4,000 miles in the next change and then go back to 5,000 miles. Hopefully, that should help the engine a bit, not that it was bad, just not what I am used to. Let me know what you decide to do, as I am not really sure what is the best thing to do.

My Mobil 1 also looks darker after running a while and the Auto it's in only has 13K and it looked dark after running a while when it had 3K.

You can't judge it by color.
