Which kind of oil

For those of you who do their own oil changes, what brand of oil do you use and why?

Just wanted to see what everyone is running

Mobile 1

I have run it in all of my vehicles since 1999. I change my oil at 7500 miles every 10 weeks in my Scion and use extend run 15000 mile Mobile 1 for the last 2 years. I average 40.5 MPG in this car and have not had any oil related problems and burn no oil. When I stared my job the Scion had 19,000 miles on it. 2 years later it has 90,000 on it.

I did my first oil change on my used 4Runner.
I put in Mobil 1 full synthetic extended performance (the 15k mile stuff).
I went with that because it's 7k miles til I reach 85k and I wanted to get the 4R on a regular 5k schedule. I'll do the next one at 85k and will use regular Mobil 1 Full Syn.

I'd trust any full synthetic from any major brand.

I wouldn't recommend Mobil1 if you're going to be spending that much cash for synthetic. Use Amsoil. I ran mine for 9k miles the last time and the results came back great from a UOA.

My past experiences with Mobil1 were okay, but they always seemed a bit too thin, and the result was I was constantly adding oil in between changes. This was on multiple cars I've had. I switched to Amsoil and problem solved.

Also, speculations that they went to a watered down version of synthetics made me look at other brands. I will probably never use Mobil1 again.

I have been using AMSOIL 0w30 for many years with extended drain intervals. My UOA alwayscome back good. I also use their filters. I did break in my 4runner on dino oil.

oil

royal purple with Z MAX additive, but used castrol syntec or mobil 1 in my other vec.

I started using Mobil 1 5W30 on my 01 4Runner and when I bought a used 04 4Runner I changed over to Mobil 1 5W30. I change the oil 5,000 miles and it seems to work out really nice.

On my older cars, now just a 1991 Previa I use Castrol GTX 10W40 and I change the oil every 3,000 miles.

I think I will change the Mobil 1 a little quicker for my first oil change in the 04. I have 2,500 miles on the oil and it looks darker than the oil after 5,000 miles in the 01. It must really help to use synthetic, also changing oil often, I think is a plus.

I like Mobil 1 because, it is readily available, you can get in on sale and it has good results.

The COLOR of the oil won't tell you how well (or not) the oil is doing its job. The only way to see how your oil (and the engine) is doing is to do a UOA.

Regarding Mobil1, this is one of many threads that have convinced me to look at better options:

Of course, this is all consumer data and speculation, but why risk it? It

I ran M1 one time and the clicking was louder than with Syntec. I now use Syntec 5W-30, which I have used to great effect on my previous vehicles. Pure-One filter every 5K. First UOA @ 20K was great.

You could probably run your PureOne filter for longer. Last UOA, I was using Amsoil 5w-30 and the Amsoil Ea filter. At 9k, the results were good. Then a month ago, I wanted to try out Royal Purple, so I put that in along with a Puralator PureOne filter. After 9k miles, I will post up the results.

MY 4 Runner only has 800 miles on it, but when the time comes, I will be putting Mobil 1 synthetic in it.

I switched over totally to this product in 1999, when I put it in my 2000 Tundra after break-in (I bought this 2000 Tundra in Sept '99). I change the oil in it (all my vehicles) at 6k miles after the post-break-in Mobil 1 changeover, as it is a great time to rotate the tires too.

I've never had an oil related break down, and that Tundra now has 130k+ miles on it and still purrs like the day I bought her - this after years of towing boats between 2200lbs and 5000lbs as well as a late model race car and its trailer. That late model racer, BTW, also runs exclusively on Modbl 1 synthetic motor oil - the same stuff I put in my street rides - though I use a thicker viscosity in the race car.

I've heard good things about Amsoil, and sadly hear most Amsoil devotees pan on Mobil 1. To each their own I guess, there is absolutely nothing wrong with Mobil 1 IMO, or I'd have already had issues with it in the nearly 10 years I've used it exclusively, and I haven't had any problems. I don't think GM would put it in their cars (the Corvette specifically) from the factory if it were *that* inferior to other products out there.

It also hasn't hurt my John Deere lawn tractor nor my 4-stroke weed-whacker either.

Nobody said that you would have engine problems if you use Mobil1. In fact, you would probably have a good-running engine for the rest of the vehicle

My concern is, the oil turned quickly to a brown color. I bought the car used, there is a good chance the oil was not changed often. By changing it quicker, I am hoping to clean out the engine. Still at 40,000 I am hoping the engine will last. I have looked at these two products, but haven't made a decision:

For now, I think just changing it often is the best thing for me.

The problem with Castrol is it is from made from Group III,not from PAO/Esters. It looks like the 0W30 from Germany might be a differnt story. I always liked Castrol, to me making synthetic from Group III and not PAO was a big mistake.

All that was pointed out was that the M1 has been on the downhill since the late 90

Good call on cleaning out the system. I actually did the same when I got my truck (used). I ran Valv. Synthetic in it for ~2000 miles and changed it out.

Yeah, all 0W-30
