Which light notebook?

After lugging my 8lb Dell inspiron around the country, i've come to the conclusion that I need something much much lighter.

Any recommendations for a ~5lb notebook?

I must admit, I'm somewhat tempted by the powerbookG4's (12) ability to come out of hibernation almost instantly. I hate when I show up to a meeting, everyone pulls out laptops, and the powerbook guys are typing a full minute or more before our XP machines finish booting.

generally i've had better luck with ibm thinkpads than i have had with dell. i think the thinkpads are built really well and handle travel abuse much better than the dell. i haven't bought one in a while, but just go to the ibm website and pick out a light one. it should be fine.

I would suggest the Powerbook. I have had my G4 Powerbook 17 for almost a year now and love it. Of course it weighs more than the 12, but I need the size for graphic design. It is blazing fast and I have yet to have any problems. I have 2GB or RAM and an 80GB hard drive. You will not be dissapointed.

I suggest the Sony S series. Looks like it has a lot of nice features for a small notebook and a cool design.

For around 5 pounds, look into getting one with Centrino technology if a PC.

I used to take train, subway, and bus to work, with my 12" powerbook in tow. Very portable, and couldn't be happier with the computer with its built in bluetooth and wi-fi. I knew I was getting a Mac from the beginning though, so that kind of made my choice easier.

Not to mention when it is closed it is only about 1" thick. All the others I have seen are twice as thick.

Here is what I have to say from professional experience:
Many find IBM reliable and good, and that is great. But I also find true with Dell; however, Dell has better customer service which will come in handy if you ever need it. Also, I had repaired both a few hundred times, and I had to laugh when someone said they are durable. The pieces on IBM are so fragile I really need to use two fingers when doing so, while with Dells I don't need to be as gently.
Powerbook, well ask yourself the following questions:
How well do I know MACs?
Not putting down MACs but there is much more out there for PC's then there are for MACs.
If your need for it is anything but graphics then IMHO putting the money into a MAC is not needed. Now if your profession is graphics then without a doubt go MAC.
