OK so I have 71K on my OEM Michelin Cross Terrains and although I'm note quite down to the wear bars, I think I should replace them soon, just to be safe. I can feel slight pulling when I go through a puddle on the interstate and I have hydroplaned a few times...........just briefly and no loss of control, but I don't want to push my luck.
So, I have looked at everything out there and I am going to spend a little extra and get another set of Michelins. With the OEM Cross Terrains discontinued, the LTX/ M/S 2's look like the obvious choice, BUT I'm big on looks and yes I am a bit of a poser too, I'll admit, so............I'm thinking about the LTX A/T 2's mainly because I like thier more agressive tread design and I like the more squared off shoulder as opposed to the rounded shoulders on the M/S2s.
My reservation on the A/Ts is treadwear (treadwear rating is 500) and road noise. For A/Ts they are quiet from what I can tell reading reviews, however, the M/S 2's I know would be silent like the Cross Terrains and they do have a 70K mile warranty (treadwear rating is 700). While the A/Ts have no treadwear warranty, many reviews I have read were positive and owners had put 60K to 80K miles on them before needing replacement.
This poses another question: Why is there no treadwear warranty on the A/T 2s? Is the rubber all that softer than the rubber used in the M/S 2s or is there just an assumtion by Michelin that anyone running the A/Ts is more likely to drive more aggressively and go off-roading all the time, etc and thus, wear down the tire tread prematurely?
Would I be a fool to get the A/T 2's???? Any thoughts or advice would be great!!
I drive 99% city and highway, however, I drive in snow several times each year.
