so currently have a 2001 that is pretty beat. Owned 5 months, tranny leak, rear seals leaking one side, needs full suspension, needs timing belt in 10k, brake master starting to make a strang enoise on start up....has the electric master cylinder.... been hit hard in front and things dont line up. 280k But has never left me down even in this harsh winters of alaska. Silver, with tan cloth

option 2. a one owner 99 limited with locker. 170k. Paint peeling a bit, no service records on anything on front suspension...so running stock lBJ's, shocks and springs....has "brown" stock radiator...slight shimmy....feels like it could use front brakes....rear end sagging. Sunroof and pass rear window do not work. Owner says uses no oil...oil changes vary between 4 and 6k miles. Dark green with silver flares and trim. tan leather, extra wheels with mounted snows...

selling my 2001 and buying the 99 I would be about 3k extra into the 99 rig. That does buy a lot though for the 2001. But then again the 99 has 110k less miles and records since new.

these things are hard to find and not cheap up here, nothing is, and I could buy a 4th gen for less money....but like 3rd gens.

ideas ??????????????

I'd rather sink maintenance/improvement money into a substantially lower mileage vehicle, if said vehicle is in decent shape and hasn't been abused or driven by teenagers.

brown plastic tank of radiator means it's gonna fail in the near future. did you check the tranny for signs of strawberry milkshake?

it normally turns brown/bronze around 300,000 - 400,000 km so the mileage of 170k miles is close. have you checked that the odometer wasn't tampered with?

i would choose the 1999 Limited if it's really in good condition.

Why keep putting money in something you're not passionate about.
You'll be much happier with the 99. I know I would.
The 99 seems to make much better financial scense in the long run to me.
Another vote for the 99.

I say the 99 with the E locker and 110k fewer miles will make you happier with your investment in the long run. You'll probably be keeping whichever you choose for a long time and end up putting maintenance/upgrade money into either. You know way more about these rigs than I probably ever will, but I think you'd agree that 99/00 are less quirky than the 01/02. Also the Imperial Jade green blends into the trees......

I vote for the 99. Lower miles, no trac/vsc to deal with, and a rear locker (make sure it works). I'd rather have to deal with maintenance so I at least know when it was done and done right.

I would only sink in money into a truck/car that financially makes sense and also one that has the least amount of rust and mileage. The 99 is what I vote for but I would also tally up the cost to fix up the current rig and see if it all makes sense.

well lthat 99 did not work out,

But this 2001 is gonna go some day......went to do some work on it today...and it has so much stinking rust I spent the day doing a 2 hour job and the electric brake master is getting worse. They dont salt or chemical the roads up here, in my area anyway.. but this one came from an area where they do.

I HATE RUST

This would be a good project for 3bears. The price is right..
99 IJM/Beige, seems to be a 4x4. No start. $850

Normally I'd say buying a car without spark is suicide, but for only $850... that's very tempting
Worst case scenario you got a donor vehicle for less than a grand

Especially the amount of money these are going for lately.
Then again, I remembered 3bears doesn't have a garage. It would be hard to work on this. Maybe not a good rig at this time.

Ive actuallly contacted the owner twice but no reply, and I know of a very solid engine out of a 2000 that the guy wants 750 for that has only 195k and asian timing belt kit with only 25k on it. Heard it run, its still in a parts car.

Sounds like you really aren't into the 01 regardless of how you try. Be patient and find a good one. On the bright side, a bad 4Runner is still better than a lot of good examples of other cars.
