Which spare parts to carry for daily driving?

Hello friends,

I'm interested in building a small kit or spare parts to carry on my V8 4Runner. I wanted to see what everyone else carriers or recommends be carried for daily driving. Please note that this does not include any tools, fluids or emergency kit items. Spare parts only. It also does not include heavy offroading or overland expeditions.

Here's what I can think of so far:

- serpentine belt
- upper radiator hose
- lower radiator hose
- fuses

Are there any other recommended parts?

thanks.

Phone? It's a Toyota 4Runner not a Fiat. When was the last (ever?) time anyone has seen a 3rd generation up 4Runner stranded for mechanical reasons? I'll take my chances with a jack and a spare tire.

AAA card? At 205k I haven't ever needed any DD spares needed. I did blow a fuse once!

Off-Road? That's a different story.

Proper maintenance negates the need to carry street spares. Off-road, your fail points will be axle shafts and other moving suspension parts. If you're in rough or extreme conditions with excessive heat, extra coolant, serpentine belt, and extra heater hose would be logical, but once again, proper maintenance and good driving skills/habits eliminates the need for many spare parts.

Well I guess for those that live in very remote locations, this might be a concern. But a lot of us live in metro areas where it's not really a concern. Just pay for roadside with your car insurance and you can get it home or to a shop for no cost.

I agree. There's about 10,000 parts in your 4runner, and a large percentage of them can shut you down if they fail. Which ones are you going to pick as spares? As far as belts and hoses, the time to replace those is before they break, not after. If you inspect them and replace when they start getting old and cracked, they'll never let you down even in extreme conditions.

According to the (excellent) maintenance records on my '06, the only critical "can't drive it anymore" failure during its first 130,000 miles was the immobilizer ECU. That's definitely a show-stopper, but am I really going to carry a spare one of those? Some things are just going to require a tow. Fortunately, those things are rare on 4runners.

Thank you all for the notes. That's why I come here.

I regularly maintain my truck - fluid changes, filters, throttle body, timing belt, etc. Most is done myself. So I'm aware of all the need for proper maintenance.

I keep some 9006s just in case and also that dam ac/fog light relay lol. Cant be without ac in Texas!

A couple extra bulbs if you really feel like it and make sure the spare tire is inflated to above road pressure (I usually set them close to Max PSI rating as they will lose air over time naturally and it's easier to deflate your spare than inflate it when you need it for most people.)

But yeah, it's a modern Toyota... don't see much going wrong on them under regular driving usually?

fuses, tire patch kit and a way to inflate- i have a lil compressor, basic handtool/metric tool set, gorilla tape, quart of oil, hose repair tape, elect. tape and basic wiring repair kit, serp belt, jumper cables, 24" pry bar and a small sledge hammer.

Most of this stuff i end up using on other peoples cars, but your an idiot if you sit on the side of the road (or worse) and can't help yourself in the most basic of situations.

this would be for driving the roads. If I'm going deep i take a few more items
