Which SUV would you buy if you did NOT need any off-road capability?

Not dumping the 4Runner, but we are considering another SUV for daily driver / street use since the wife likes to sit higher up. I was curious as to what others might consider buying.

I have a Murano now and I don't think I would buy another Nissan. Just not happy with the quality. I think I would most likely get a Rav4 or Highlander. My mom has a Highlander that is now 12 years old and we have changed the oil, bought new tires, and bought 2 new batteries. I would stick with the Toyota fam.

I would get a Honda Pilot Elite. Tons of space, tons of features and it's a Honda. Apparently they reworked the troublesome transmission this year which apparently was it's only defect. I really like the Highlander, but it is very cramped, solid 2nd place for me. I LOVE the 4Runner, but as a family hauler, it sucks, LOL.

I recently drove a RAV4 for a rental vehicle. It was a nice driving vehicle.

If you need a larger vehicle, the Highlander is also a good option. I have driven one of those a couple of times. The newer ones have a lot of those tech features.

Those seems like some solid, money wise, recommendations.

I was also entertaining something a bit sportier and or with more luxury trim as well… AWD Acura RDX came to mind since I got that as a loner car once and it drove well or the Lexus equivalent which I don’t know anything about yet.

This would be replacing our current daily driver, 2006 Acura TL. I’m not married to the brand but I am familiar with their offerings.

The wife’s top pick is a Porsche Macan GTS and as much as I want that in the garage, it’s a lot of coin and more than we should be spending on transportation. I am looking for alternate options that are just more reasonable, but still fun and luxury oriented.

My wife likes smaller vehicles and also sitting up high, so we bought a new Subaru Crosstrek. It can actually handle some off-road like forest service roads & such and is great in snow. And since she drives long distance to work, the gas mileage is great... around 37-38 average since we've owned it. Great little car. I also like the new Rav4 but she didn't and the gas mileage is not near as good.

My wife drives a 2017 Land Rover Discovery Sport. Sticker was in the $53K range and while the off road capability is most definitely still there, it's super gucci inside. Heated and cooled front seats, heated rear seats that recline and slide forward and back, windshield is heated, nav, leather (of course) and it rides and handles amazingly. The turbo 4 cylinder is so much fun to drive :jump: olice:! Way more creature comforts than I have ever had in a SUV with a bit of piece-of-mind.

Highlander.

Avoid anything with the ZF 9spd transmission. It's junk. I have owned a vehicle with it. Never again. Also avoid anything with a cvt.

When I was looking for new SUV type the Audi Q5 Q7 had the creature comforts, decent room, power was good,
AWD, build quality, decent price.
Decided I didn't want any car payment opted for 17 yr old 01 Ltd 4x4 3rd Gen.

It's actually well laid out and fairly roomy for 4 adults. Quality-wise, it's nice. I think this is the Limited interior. We have a Premium in cloth but it looks very similar. Ours is an '18 model and we already have 25k miles on it and we like it a lot.

My GF just leased a 2018 Audi Q5. She had her mind set on a BMW X3 but the Audi won both of us over after a brief test drive. The interior is excellent and it has one of the smoothest, quietest rides of any car I've ever driven. The base 2.0T engine is quite snappy and it returned 30mpg on a highway cruise. It's certainly not the cheapest option out there but I recommend it if you're looking for something more on the premium end.

I actually went car shopping over the past weekend and against my better judgment went to a Porsche dealer… I got to say that Macan GTS is amazing. Very comfortable and well put together SUV. It’s been a long time since I sat in something that really excited me. I felt like I was sitting inside a fancy mechanical watch. We are still both on the same page in regards to a more reasonable choice, but I can absolutely see that thing in our future. To be honest I started to feel out of my league walking around that place when you start to see things in the $150-250k price range… which in it’s own way makes the Macan a reasonable choice when you really look at it for what it is.

Also went to Lexus to re-visit the GX, Subaru, Mercedes, and a couple other places but… nothing really stood out at me. I’ll have to add Audi to the list. No rush to buy, but enjoying the process of looking.

I have been very impressed with the ford line up. I drove an Edge for a weekend as a rental car, probably put 500 miles on it. Drove very nice, even handled a fire road, dare i say it, better than my 4runner. It had an eco-boost in it and got >30mpg from phoenix to the grand canyon and back.

In the next six months to a year, I'll be in the market for a daily driver for work. I got a Lincoln MKC as a rental car recently and was really impressed. It even has air-conditioned seats! It's a serious contender for me.
