Which Synthetic Differential Fluid to Use?

So before my trip up to Tahoe this January, I plan on doing the transmission and differential fluids. I have always been partial to Red Line when it comes to synthetics and looking over their website made me confused...

They have some good synthetic replacement fluids and then they have some heavy duty stuff that caught my intrest. I just don't have any experience with some of their special "ShockProof" fluids and their more special stuff...


Any of you guys have any input/ experience?

M1 in the diffs and engine. Toyota WS in the transmission, since you have an 04.

FWIW the synthetic diff fluid completely rectified the harmonic vibration I had from the rear end in the cold on the highway.

I have always been partial to Redline for my synthetics but i'll give Mobile1 a looke.

I'm not sure how the Shockproof or their heavier duty fluids would match the application I have in mind. I plan on doing a good amount of off-roading and highway driving, was thinking of the heavier stuff to give some better quality for the gears.

If they really do flow like 75W90 with the a film thickness of 75W250, that sounds like a great application for differentials that see a lot of use, particularly the 4WD on my V8.

I'm using the WS Fluid in the Transmission, I would rather go with the Amsoil, but I have a really good extended warranty so I'm not gonna give them an excuse on that end and I can get it relatively cheap since I work at the dealership.

But the Transfer Case, Front & Rear Differentials deserve some quality stuff.

I use Redline D6 in the trans and M1 in everything else..

I use Redline on differentials and Toyota WS on transmission. M1 for engine oil. I do a great bit of towing and each time I've changed them they've been super clean.

I've always used AmsOil, from front to back, engine through tranny through diffs.

I have Amsoil in my front/rear diff, transfer case, and Engine oil. I haven't flushed out my transmission yet..

We've been very pleased w/ M1 Delvac gear oil In our race transmissions and in our trucks and heavy equipment. It's a much better choice than the m! found at the FLAPS.

Haven't done the transmission yet, but I use Amsoil 75w-90 Server Gear in the diffs and transfer case and it's been great.

Redline... the stuff is about as slippery and long lasting as they come.

I use Redline in the 4Runner differentials and transfer case, in many of my past vehicles and in my Harley Road King Classic's all three holes.

Great oil!

I ran Redline fluids in all my gearboxes in my '93 turbo Eclipse that saw 8 seasons of racing and never had any issues and if it held up that well to the abuse I put my car through on and off the track then it's probably overkill for my truck but I've been using it since I bought it in '04.

I didn't feel it worth enough effort to make a new thread so I am posting the question here since it is related.

We toss in LSD Additive for our Tacoma rear ends with the LSDs and such. My question is, do any of you have any benefit from LSD Additives in the transfercase?

I realize its a Torsen Style and not Disc, but I have been seeing mixed comments on wether or not you should add some to them

I know GL-5 has additives in it for high-pressure, but I am just curious if it'd be a good idea in the long run.

If you have a limited slip differential..then you need to add the additive. I you don't have a limited slip differential then adding it won't buy you a thing. And won't hurt anything either.

As for the transfercase...NOT necessary. And adding it won't matter one bit.

So basically we've determined that any synthetic fluid is fine for the diffs in the 4R. If they're going to explode on the trail then they're going to explode regardless of the synthetic fluid in them.

The diffs are too weak for the V8 power plant IMO.
