Which timing belt kit for 4th gen?

Looking on Amazon, I see some various kits and not sure which one to get. Also, some come with an oil pump in addition to belt and water pump. None of the Evergreen kits seem to have reviews. But Gates fails to label their parts efficiently (and maybe they don't offer) so using the search tool doesn't yield any results for their products. Same problem with Aisin which do have quite a few reviews but can't find the kit specifically for my vehicle.

Do you have a v6 or a v8? v6 has a timing chain that does not usually need replaced. V8 has a timing belt. That link is for a chain.

Assuming you have a v8 this is the Aisin kit I put on mine with a gates serp belt from rockauto.com. The kit comes with the timing belt, water pump, pullys, and gaskets you need. I bought a new thermostat and the coolant from the dealer. You also need rtv sealer for the water pump/thermostat joint.



There are a few step by step youtube vids and blackworks did a write up on here too to help you with what tools you need. Its a pretty big job, and if you mess up it could ruin the engine. :target:

I have a V6 which I believe is only the 1GR-FE model. Thanks for the info. That would explain my confusion yesterday on the net looking for this info. Not thinking right this week. :doh:

at 110,000 miles and need to take care of the 105k and 110k stuff. Had a shock yesterday looking at my coolant which is well below the L line. Time for a flush. Figured I'd take preventative maintenance and replace whatever else needs to be replaced while I'm in there, so I'm trying to compile list.

Also, anyone know where the heck the sensor is for the coolant temp? I've looked all over for that thing and cannot locate.

Thats a good question and hard for us to prove one way or the other. The research I did before I bought my kit was yes it's OEM, but when I changed my belt and water pump there was no brand stamped on the original. It looked identical to the aisin pump I replaced it with, but no stamp like the new one.

Thanks for the reply. Same here, what I can find including on the Aisin site is they come from the same plant, meaning Aisin is the OEM for some of Toyota parts. The water pump I don't have a problem with, it's the belt that makes me concerned, is that made by Aisin as well and do they make the Toyota original belt.

Is it the same as using a Gates belt, yes some say it's just as good....but, will it last as long as the Toyota part is the question. Lasting is one thing, snapping just out of the blue is another. I've used Gates in the past for fan belts and they squealed after a short time just like other after market lower quality parts.

The price I got from Toyota parts direct just for the belt is $78cdn which is 1/3 the total cost of the Aisin kit, the pump was $170. Is there not much history yet on these Aisin parts going 100K and being problem free?

Pretty sure the belt was a Mitsubishi brand that comes in the Aisin kit. I have not heard very good things about the gates kits both in toyota or honda. The Aisin kit I installed on my runner 20k miles ago has given no issues. The Aisin kit I put on my acura tl 50k miles ago has no issues either. You should check the kit a few posts up I posted about getting it from Rockauto at a good price. That gates belt I bought is the serp belt.

I have used dozens of the Asian kits off amazon on people's cars. Subaru, honda, toyota, all legit parts and never had a issue.

I was also wondering, is there a check engine light warning for when it's time to change the timing belt or does Toyota just expect the owner to know it requires changing at a certain millage.

I've asked before and just got crickets but who has actually changed the chains on the V6? Dealer or self? I'm still on my ticking time bomb, lol.

From what I've read about the Toyota V6's, the timing chain will basically last the life of the engine. I've known a few people with Toyota's with the V6 that went over 500k kms without doing anything to the engine. They are built like tanks if you take care of them by simply changing the oil on regular intervals.
