Which Tires do you suggest?

I have a 97 4Runner Limited. It's completely stock and I want to keep it that way but I do want bigger tires. I need something with good tread wear and great for city driving and snow as well. I really want Mud Terrain tires because I love the look of it so that is my first choice, the other would be BFG Rugged Terrain.

So here are my questions:

What would be the largest tire size I can go on the stock wheels that will still be practical for city driving and easy on gas/tread wear?

I would really rather have Mud Terrain Tires, but are they good for snow and have great tread wear?

Can Mud Terrain tires fit on the factory wheels without a lift kit?

What are some great Mud Terrain Tires?

This. The Duratracs perform excellent on wet and dry highways and have done well on the few light offroading trips I've done. They are the most aggressive looking A/T tire I've seen to date.
 
Unless you're looking at 15 miles/gallon. Forget the mud terrains. Once I put Michelin's LTX M/S, i was hooked. Doing 70 mph in the pouring rain without any sign of hydroplaning, driving in 8" of snow up my buddy's driveway to help him out of his house, 65-70k mile tire and best of all.....21/mpg. Love em. Seriously, if you occasionally see dirt, but you're more of a up and down the road everyday kind of driving, forget the rest.
 
Since you mentioned Rugged Terrains, I'll throw my vote towards them. I plan on getting those. I've read 100s of reviews, and haven't seen a bad one yet. 50k warranty, great on the street, help with gas mileage, quiet, and are good in any condition except deep mud (clay). And they're decently priced. Oh, and go 265 75 16 for stock suspension.
 
My next set will be KM2's in the 285/75/r16 flavor.

That aren't really considered to be true mud terrains. There basically between a Mud Terrain and an All-Terrain.
 
Duratracs definitely look great, and perform well, but they don't really last that long do they? I've also *read* on here that people notice a drop in MPG when switching to DTs. I was going to get Duratracs, but liked the 50k mile warranty of the GY Wrangler Silent Armors. They also perform really well in snow, and rain, *from what I've read*.

I had the old style Rugged Trails on my 2004 Tacoma double cab.. they came on 'em from the factory, and I did not like them. My boss just put a set of the newer style on his work truck and said they're pretty decent, but he won't get them again just because he likes the BFG AT's so much. The newer style is definitely a nice looking tire.

I second the vote for Michelin LTX M/S. If you're doing city driving... I've only heard good things about those tires.

Are you referring to the Duratrac? I would agree in this case.

If not, just curious how you came to the conclusion that the KM2 is not a true Mud Terrain. Their tread pattern, tread depth, and soft compound rubber seems very mud terrain to me.

I was referring to the KM2's. I had a conversation recently with a couple FJ's about the KM2 and how it not only works in mud, but is also great at a number of things, including on road. A true Mud terrain wouldn't be very good on road, giving the Km2's a slight A/T vibe.

Ya I've read nothing but bad reviews on the Rugged Trails, aka Rugged Fails. These Rugged Terrains however are a totally different tire. Just a step below the ATs, so should perform pretty well.

That's funny. And so true. On one of my first trips in the '97 (back when it still had the Rugged Fails on it) we punctured two of those tires on one trip. The first one was punctured by a stick, so we put on the spare, which then got a puncture and quickly went flat on an easy gravel road in the middle of nowhere. That was my first time hitch hiking.

For mileage, cost and overall performance: Yokohama Geolandar A/T-S... 265/75r16 are about $150 on Amazon... get the local tire shop to price match. My last set went 63,000 miles with tread remaining. New set has 10k on them and looks like new. They're a decent looking tire IMO as well.

Then by mud terrains I'm going to assume you mean Interco Boggers. My Mickey Thompson Baja MTZ's have better road manners then the original A/T tires that my truck had on it when I bought it. Also I get around 17 mpg in the city and 21 on the highway so its a crapshoot. I've had the MTZ's on solid rock, dirt and rock mix, mud, rivers, dry and wet pavement and I've never had a complaint. I can't vouch for their treadlife because I've only had them for around 3000 miles.

Make it easy on yourself and get what you want. If your hearts set on a mud terrain get one. Mud terrains give you that beautiful tire noise :boink:

Ive had three sets (currently running the 3rd set) on 2 different vehicles. Excellent road manners, very quiet, take very little weight to balance, wear like iron and handle my style of off road travels very well. Its not a dedicated anything tire, but it does everything well.

They drive like **** and ****ty company. - personal experience.

Get some DT if you want a AT tire that rides well and does snow. I'm use to buying new tires every 10k for my M3, so I don't care about treadwear.

I have been close to TW a few times, but warranty and issues I've read about kept me from them. Plus the fact that they don't offer a true on-road only tire. The BFG clone is the closest thing they offer.

My experience with TW - abbreviated version - shipped 2 tires with sidewalls damaged to the steel cords, TW gives me the runaround.

Had they not given me the runaround it might be different, Since they didnt even admit their was an issue, Im happy to share my experience. Had to threaten a chargeback.
