Which tires to choose? Help a brother out!

What to do....I just picked up a 1998 runner on Sunday. I just don’t know what tires to run. I’ve ran Goodyear mtr’s and bfg mt’s on my old 1st gen taco, bfg mt’s on my 1st gen xterra, and currently running cooper stt pro on my16 taco. Looking to run 285/75/16. Help a brother out.

I'm a big fan of the Grabber AT2. My new-to-me has decent tires on it so I can't justify spending money on tires right now but when the time comes, it's going to be the Generals again. I've had them on my other 3rd gen, a Grand Cherokee, and a F350.

I’ve had those too on my Subaru Forester that I sold to buy this runner.

Are you looking into buying mud-terrains or all-terrains?
My favorite Mud-terrains are the Goodyear MTR, and I've heard good things about the new cooper STT PRO.

My favorite all-terrains are the BFG KO2.

In a 285/75/16 flavor i'm assuming you want an all-terrain and would go with the BFG ko2 hands down. No other all-terrain compares in ride quality, traction, and longevity IMO.

x3, although mine are 265s

I had two sets of 285 KO2s in the past 4 or 5 MONTHS. The first set was replaced under warranty because all four were out of round by varying amounts (props to BFG for warrantying them) and I just got sick of the 2nd set driving like crap and just took them off for the Falkens. I'm much happier.
 
I went the 285/70r16 route....

Nitto Trail Grapplers are Mud Terrains and they are awesome.

it's basically a 32/11.5 r16 vs a 32/10.5 r16

Grips crazy! haven't used the locker in months
that Mud Terrain Hum, it's not loud, it's actually quieter than expected
Have air'd down to 10psi NO problem!!! many times!
Strong! much better in my desert roads

cons
Heavy (mpg hit, acceleration hit)
stronger sidewalls, not much tire flex... even at 10psi

You need to tell us what the purpose of the vehicle is going to be used for. On road/off road, lifted, sand, rain, snow, etc...

I have them as well. I wanted to move up to a 33", so I sold my Duratracs from them. So far they've been great. They are much quieter and smoother on-road than the Duratracs. They handle great in the snow, sand, and mud (though my time has been limited with these in the mud).

They are definitely slower acceleration-wise. But I'd say that's mostly due to moving up in size.

Some people have issues with balancing them and being out-of-round. From what I've read you're going to be fine with a 285/75/16, as they do not have the balancing issues that a narrower tire may have.

Overall, I think the tire does a great job and I would recommend to anyone who is looking for the best "bang for your buck" tire.
 
All Terrain tires are going to be a good compromise for mixed use, I'm running 265/70-16 Hankook Dynapro ATs and find them a good tire but not on loose sand and rock

My next tire is likely going to be an M/T, size to be determined, but an E rated tire with good road manners and capable of being aired down to wheel and overland.

Like [MENTION=7105]Scramble[/MENTION] said, know your purpose, or just run 24s and spinners like he does :D

You will feel a very slight hit in acceleration, and I really do mean slight I could hardly tell when I had mine installed. The extra weight is worth it IMO though because they double layer the sidewall. I took a rock into the side of my sidewall that was probably half an inch deep but didn't even reach the belts or ever leak air. They're heavy but that makes them more rugged and resistant to the sharp pokey objects we like to drive over

Dont listen to Octane, he doesn't even have any meat on his 20's.

I'm leaning more towards all-terrains. I love the more aggressive look of mt's. Also, I run cooper stt pro's on my Tacoma, so if I got all-terrains I could also swap from rig to rig too. IDK. I do like the bfg ko2's. That's one of the candidates.

Well, this is our 3rd vehicle. I don't commute to work, so I'm looking to build this one more for offroad. I have a good budget to throw at it right away since I'm using every last penny I sold my Subaru for.
