Whining noise during acceleration

MINE IS making this noise now as well, although it came on just all of a sudden. so i am gonna do some listening to see if it does it when in gear or all the time.

For all the people who were curious about the verdict it was the torque converter. I just got it replaced today and the noise is gone!!

Except the noise did you feel any other strange behavior on the trans working, like slipping, strides? I'm asking because I'm having the same experience. A noise starting at 40mph than it stops and comes back at 75mph(in another sound frequency). No slippings, no strides, only the noise when it in gear and when the accelerator pedal is pressed. Except it, the trans is working perfeclty. 2001 4Runner.

my 02 has the trans whine when in gear trans worked great. I noticed when I took it out one of the torque converter bolts looked like it was hot when the other 5 were a nice gold. no trans shop would touch it just wanted 2900 for a reman. my fluid was very black and I had changed filter and oil 3 months ago. thought it was the alt but it just got louder.

Could also be a pinion bearing.

I took it into the dealership today and they diagnosed it as a going/gone transfer case bearing.

$780 for a used case and just under $500 for labor. What do you guys think? Is that a reasonable price?

gah dammit, 81k miles and needing a new transfer case?!

I too am having this EXACT issue. Came across this thread while researching the noise today.

The noise is metallic sounding. It ONLY happens when in drive and with super soft acceleration up to 2K RPM- then it stops. If cruising at 2k RPM it makes the noise.

When the noise/ metal whine starts it is with the gas. Originally I thought it sounded like a throttle cable was loose and pinging off something metal due to the slight vibration sound.

I would like to fix this issue soon. Please update.

Update. The noise DOES happen when I rev the engine and my foot is on the brake stopping her from rolling.

This should mean it's NOT transmission related right?

Same sorta issue i think

1994 4Runner. V6. Low power. had the transmission rebuild summer of 2014. Today a guy... a parking attendant... said he was a mechanic... said that it sounded like my transmission was going out because of a "whining."

It makes a sound but I never thought it bad.

So the "whining" mentioned here is it loud? It's when I accelerate.

This is my first post for whatever that means.

Taking it to my mechanic tomorrow.

I can't figure out what that noise is on mine either. I just got an 05 SR5. it runs great except for that noise. to me it sounds like the rpms are going to high before the shift, but the rpm gauge is showing normal signs. to test to see if the gauge was working, i accelerated quickly and it showed proper readings. don't know what it could be. maybe fan clutch?

I have a 99 4Runner SR5 with a cold air intake. I recently had my exhaust done about 2 months ago (nothing special just a magnaflow from pepboys) and I started to notice about a month ago that I have a high pitch whistle while under a load during acceleration. You can start to hear this while very faintly around 2200 rpms, then louder and louder as you push down harder on the throttle. When you gun it and push the peda to the floor, and if there is anything next to me (a car, guard rail, etc.) the noise is very, very high pitched until it shifts into a high enough gear, then the sound is almost deafening. As it continues to shift the sound gets less and less prominent, until I am at a cruising speed where the sound is unheard.
Now, I have been told that it could be an exhaust leak, but I have no ticking sounds at all. I have checked with a a paper for faulty welds while it was parked and running, nothing. I took it to the muffler shop where they told me that the welds are fine and that the engine is misfiring and my exhaust is "popping". Didn't explain the whistle.
I have been told it could be a cracked exhaust manifold? No visible cracks the naked eye that I can see.
I do have a leak in the valve cover, which again doesn't explain the whistle.
My dad says it could be the cold air intake, however I don't think this could be the case since the noise just recently arose, and I've had the intake since I bought it back in October. All the cables and hoses going into the intake have been clamped and tightened and as far as I can tell, I have no splits in any of them.

So far, I haven't been able to figure it out, I know I'm not much help but I'm throwing this out there in hopes that maybe it could help both of us out. Thanks and good luck

Well , I'm adding my T4R to this list . Been making that same sound for about a month now . No difference in performance though , just that whirring sound on take off . Changed all fluids but makes no difference , I'm thinking its torque converter. Anyone else experiencing this lately ?

I have a 1998 with a really worn pinion bearing that sounds like a supercharger. Check your diff fluid. I toned it down with some 85W140 but I still need a new diff.
