whinning noise

Noticed today a low whining noise driving about 60Mph and it happens just when I lift my foot off the gas pedal for a little period and then stops.
2020 with only 12k on it

any idea what it could be?

I have this at 50-60 mph for about 4 seconds after taking foot off accelerator. with MY2017

TSB looks not that simple. Other than the annoying whine, can anyone guess potential adverse affects if not addressed?
 
The Tacoma TRD's seem to have a similar issue, something about the way the gears are cut. Basically the TSB is about reducing the noise, not eliminating it really (same deal with the Tacoma) at best you may be able to reduce the noise, but honestly if you've already noticed/locked-in on it then you'll probably hear it anyways.

I'd say crank up the radio, most of the vehicles I have driven the noise isn't that noticeable above road noise unless you're really tuned in to it. Unless you're one of those psychopaths that drives in silence. :biggrin1:

In the TSB where it lists a "previous" part number and then a "new" part number Toyota actually changed the part used in production for a new part to remedy the issue. Correct? Also, post production VIN #'s would have received all new part numbers during the production process. Correct? For example a 2021 4Runner during production would have received all the "new" parts listed under the Post Counter Vehicles. Correct? Thanks.

The thing is the TSB lists up to 2019 year. Mine is 2020 so you would think that they would have put the new parts automatically, but I guess not...(unless the new parts are in and the noise is reduced, not eliminated)
Unless there is a new TSB for 2020 as well....

So that I understand what you were originally asking, does the whine occur at the actual time you lift off throttle, or is the whine present when driving and then stops soon after you lift off throttle?

Even though the TSB does replace the diff, I think that because they also address ways to make it quieter, it means -- to me -- that it's not necessarily a mechanical issue but rather a noise issue, and the replacement unit will likely have the same noise, which they are trying to address via the first steps in the TSB.

My whine is at 65-70 but I noticed it after I installed full skids, so I theorize that there is more sound being reflected back up into the cabin. I've also read that the whine can come from the t-case as well, which makes sense, at least in my case, because the t-case is fully covered by the skid.

I wouldn't really worry about it unless the noise changes or becomes louder. There were a number of threads on this forum I've read by people having the same issues but there was never a conclusive issue found with exception of a few that did find metal in the diff oil and ended up with replacements. I drained my fluid last week and found no metal. So I'm gonna let it go.

You may drain and fill the rear diff for peace of mind, and if you find no unusual metal, fill it, close it and monitor.

Ya good info. I think the TSB only reduces the noise and might not eliminate it.

I believe the whining noise ( I have not noticed till now) is coming at about 60 and when I slightly take off my foot off the pedal. I will retest again and confirm that it is not a steady noise at cruise speed...
