White '04 Clear coat issue

Hey guys just purchased an '04 white runner SR5, 140K. Seems as though the clear on the upper half of the runner is faded pretty bad. Aside from wet sanding or clay/& Polish are there any tricks that may be handy, or does she possibly need a new paint/clear job done? I love white but they are hard to tell if you have clean, it seems like every white vehicle I have bought does this. Not while I have it, but when I purchase it

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the white is a single stage paint and does not have a clear coat. Give it a good detail and see if that helps, maybe you can also try to seal it with the Meguiar's wax they designed for white paint, I heard it works pretty well. Any pictures? Good luck!

Correct the white is a single stage paint and doesnt have a clear coat.

That does NOT mean you cant buff it to get the shine back though. Im not sure what your skill level is but a good 3 stage compound buff job can make it look almost new if its done correctly! You will need to be careful since it is a single stage paint but you should be fine

A positive note about our white trucks is they don't show the scratches! On the trail I've had people comment on how 'pristine' mine looks until I tell them to look from a close angle to which they say "Holy Sh1t, you're covered with pinstripes!"

Just take the good with the bad!

It's above novice lol, I have an orbital buffer. And I have some very minimal abrasive compound I can use. Has anyone used "Wet Paint" it works well on my Tundra. When you say 3 stage compound I'm assuming you mean 3 different ones, fine cut, medium etc. ? Thanks for all the input guys, I'd like to get it shiny and take care of it.

Bueler..... just wondering. I have always hear when paint seems to have lost it's pigment you can buff it with compound etc. but doesn't fix it. Pretty stupid Toyota didn't put a clear protective coat on white paint....

actually, the single stage paints tend to buff out scratches better than CC'd paint

Thanks for the info, so would a fine cut compound with an orbital buffer get the job done? Then a good wax? Thanks again

I would test a small area with finishing polish first, such as Meguiar's m205, and see if it takes care of your problem. If it does, you're good to do the rest of the truck and follow it with a wax. If not, go with a heavier cut compound such as Meguiar's Ultimate Compound or the like, follow it with the finishing polish, then the wax. You should clay bar the whole vehicle before using any polish or compound, after washing, to get the best results.

As far as 3 stage yes its 3 different pads and 3 different compounds, and then after that you use another pad and wax to seal it. I use Adams polishes and they are expensive but I am anal and kind of a detail guy.

Looking around on their site it looks like they have switched their packages around but heres the basic parts of what I use
Adam's Basic Porter Cable 7424 XP Polisher Kit


Heres my 04 thats black and I wish it was white more than anything in the world!!! lol it was my wifes at first and she had to have black...:crazy:

I buffed my white car...2 stages. It bought all the shine back.


I think it's easier than buffing CC paint.

If you want some good tips on buffing check out a guy on youtube under DRIVE/Clean. This guy is the founder of AMMO and has great videos. There's an amazing one on their about different paint types and buffing out swirls/scratches. That might help you out.

I'm no detailer, but I had this lying around and it works pretty good this past weekend. Got the gloss back and I can see my reflection too. I did not use a machine, just good a microfiber cloth.

Very sharp! I just got rid of a black Tacoma, I will never go back to a black vehicle. They look damn good clean... for about 10 min. lol
