Who is running 33's with stock gears?

The more I research installing 33's, the more $$$ it's looking like I'll have to spend (3" suspension lift + a body lift + possible trimming). Now i'm reading in order to get even decent gas mileage I should also upgrade my gears?

I've got a 02 4runner SR5 4wd w/ stock gears. Anyone running 33's with stock gears?

Pro's and con's of stock gears?

I run 285/75/R16's, "33's", on stock 4.10 gears. Unless you're keeping track of mileage on something like a GPS unit, or anything other than the odometer, your numbers will be of. I don't mean to insult your intelligence since that's probably obvious.

I've been getting about 260 miles per tank off of the odometer, which is probably right around 300-310 stock tire miles. That puts it right around 17-18 mpg, which is about 2-4 mpg lower than with stock.

I plan on upgrading my gears eventually, but I am getting used to running them with stock gears. My 285s measure 33.0-33.1"

Honestly, the only real downside I have observed is cruise control is pretty useless on the highway on anything but dead-flat roads. Constant dramatic downshifts become your life otherwise, heh.

I am getting around 18.5-19mpg right now, which is honestly lower than expected. My wife's 5th gen briefly had 20s and heavy 33" retreads, and I still got 23ish mpg on the same commute.

I noticed a more drastic decrease in mpg due to the front and rear bumper. I held right about 16-16.5 mpg after the lift before the bumpers. I'm only getting 14.5 now. I track it using the fuelly app.

Plate bumpers front an rear, lifted 3.5", Goodyear 33s, manual and STOCK 4:10 gears.

Shift it at 2500-2750 and it doesn't seem to hate life as much as I expected.

12? Lol I've had 6 Toyota rigs with the 3.4 and none of them ever got close to that mileage. Even my automatic Tacoma would touch 20 on the freeway. Rest have all been manuals.

My 3rz is fully freshened up. Plugs, wires, o2 sensors, synthetic diff fluid, LCE header and Volant intake, ect. No smoke and mirrors, hand calculated mileage with GPS speedometer app on my phone to verify odometer variance.

I stated I got 19 with my last 4runner which was a 3.4. The AOR front plate bumper is only 75 lbs, my Shrockworks rear is probably 150. No different between the two versus another passenger. The killer would be the height and tires. It chugs along at 2400 rpms at 65 and gets great mileage.

If you only get 12 on highway something is really wrong with your motor. I can get 17+mpg on highway.

Apparently? 21.88 hand calculated. First drive on the freeway from Olympia to Bellevue, WA at 63 mph (gps) no traffic and back down. It's still too gutless for me either way.

I average 16.5mpg with a 3RZ-4.56grs & 33" MT's.

I used to average 18.5 with 275/70R16 AT's (2001-2014)

With the stock 265 HWY tires I could get 22-23mpg on the HWY at 55mph but who can really drive that slow! LOL

If I was just running around town I would agree with you. But I am not. Running 35s now with stock gearing.

Depends on what you want to do, how you want to do it, and looks. I wheel the crap out of mine so bigger is better to keep from dragging my skid plates. I don't care about mileage or being able to pass people on the highway going up hills. But - on the flats with my 3rz I can still do 80 mph.

If you only get 12 on highway something is really wrong with your motor. I can get 17+mpg on highway.

When your lifted on 33s fully armored and flying 85mph, my scan gauge reads about 10-12 mpg.

I was going 85mph, at roughly little over 3k rpms and it was 11.5mpg

Well, this type of driving is certainly beyond what most on here would describe as "normal" highway speeds. I feel like I'm hauling ass at 75+ in my rig lol.
