who wants to go wheeling?

All I was mentioning is down travel is often neglected to get more "lift". As for a 3rd gen the max loosely agreed upon lift is 2.5" in the front. Some people are stuffing OME 860s in the back but that's over 5" of rear lift unloaded.

It took me damn near a year to sell my nightrod special. Sold it for what I owed just to get it out of my garage. Some hot shot kid bought it, trashed it a week later.

Anyone going to be in flagstaff friday? I am going to head up there to do some wheeling. looks like rain all week, so should be some good ole' muddy fun in the aspens!

If anyone is interested, the club I do most of my wheelin with - Offroad Passport - is putting on a Trail Cleanup at Mud Springs just north of Four Peaks this Saturday. Here is some info on the event:

Other: 10/24/2015: Offroad Passport Mud Springs Trail Clean-up Sponsored by Extreme Terrain - Offroad Passport Community Forum

And don't forget the 6th annual Four Peaks Cleanup on Nov 7th!

It's been pouring for days, i got tired of seeing all these muddy Toyotas and not being one of them so i went out earlier today and it is definitely very muddy. One pit was a little deeper than it looked and i ended up hood deep. Where do you go wheeling up here?

Haha! Great! That's what I am hoping for. I don't have anywhere in specific I am going, I've never been off roading up there. Got any recommendations?

Lake marshall rd off of lake Mary is nice, if you go straight when the road splits instead of going up to the observatory theres a bunch of trails. And if you go far enough without taking any turns you come to a cattle guard where theres a pit from water runoff on the left and the open fields turn into a tighter road. it's real muddy from that point but i was in 4x4 and had traction about 5% of the time, the mud is like gel. Anywhere off of lake Mary rd is nice though

So wait.... is it to say 2.5 lift is "A lot" and your saying "down travel" will not be ideal at that height?

P.S. Someone find a buddy who wants a motorcycle! lol

.

there are some significant differences between the front and rear suspension. the front suspension has a fixed ammount of travel, and the maximum ammount of droop remains the same. basically what happens when you lift it is you trade down travel for more up travel, the other thing that happens is you increase the preload at full droop, but the preload at ride height is actually the same. ideally you want something close to equal up and down travel. the rear on the other hand is different. you can have different shocks that will keep your up and down travel equal and give you more travel and more lift. the reason for this is because the control arms are much longer and you have only one long drive shaft to worry about instead of two short cv axles.

anyways the reason to not lift the front too much is you reduce the ammount of down travel.

I was just out in the Happy Jack area yesterday. Did about 40 miles on forest service roads. Ended up getting an inch of hail which was interesting. Truck is good and dirty now!

I was in that muddy slop all last weekend and again on Thursday hunting elk out around Mormon Lake. The whole north country was a slop hole. I will say that standard all terrain tires do not handle the mud like a wider treaded mud terrain tire... But they did good enough to keep me going all over the place back there. Worst was a few runoff puddles that made it 3/4 of the way up the tires. Fortunately, that whole area has a rocky base layer that you can usually reach at some point for traction (when you're not out in an open field or meadow where it can get silly deep in silty mud).

I finally got the 4Runner washed up last night. Not perfect, but the majority of the cinder mud is now gone. It'll take a few more washings to get the underside looking normal again though. still a ton of the red adobe mud still stuck on there.

Happy Wheeling!!!

More importantly, did you get an elk??

Alas, no. I was on them on the second day of the season, but no shots on any cows were available. My middle son and I found a small herd of around 15 elk and sat on them until they came in. I had a 4 point bull within 20 yards of me, along with two three points and a couple of forks... but no cows. And all I had was a cow tag. :censored: Tracked another small herd that same day to within 300 yards, but just couldn't catch up to them for a shot. Third day (Sunday) we couldn't find them at all, until we were on our way out. The herd, all 50 or so of them, was in the middle of Mormon Lake at 2:30 in the afternoon. There were hunters trying to get close but you can't sneak up on an elk in the open. I set up for a shot, just in case they came my way, but I don't think they ever got closer than 600 yards. Add to that there was a nasty 15 mph cross wind, and it was just not gonna happen.

I went back up there on Thursday, by myself, in a last ditch effort to get one on the last day of the season... Around 1:00 I stumbled across a small herd of four elk (two cows, a juvenile and one fork bull). And by stumbled, I literally walked into them about 150 yards up the road. The bull made me so I was stuck. No cover and nowhere for a supported shot. I stood motionless for around 2 minutes until I could finally inch my way to some cover and a place to support my shot. But by that time, the cows had moved on behind cover and the only shot I had after that was straight up the rear. I'm not a fan of green goo in the abdominal cavity, so I didn't that that one...

All in all it was fun, if not a little bit frustrating. It rained almost every day we were up there. We were tent camping so it truly made it a cold and damp slog every day. But the experience of being that close to a herd of bulls with my kiddos made up for that. Next year both the boys should get drawn for the junior hunt, so we should make up for it with two elk in the freezer in 2016. (hopefully!)

i got stuck in a water hole between wynona and marshal lake for about 2 hours yesterday. had to hike out a couple miles till i found someone to tow me out. note to self, do not attempt to cross bodies of water alone. first tow company wanted around 450 to come out (150 an hour, estimated 3 hours total round trip including getting me unstuck) 2nd guy only quoted me 75 an hour. i had him come out, but ran into that other truck that pulled me out. i still gave the other guy 75 for coming out, as he got there right when i got to where i had service again.

check engine light, traction control light, and terrain assist lights were all on after getting unstuck, and the car wouldn't go over 35ish. it went into some sort of safe mode. i cleared the CEL and everything went back to normal thankfully.

but i was in 2wd the whole time until i got to that spot with no slipping unless i mashed on the gas, even then i kept moving, just throwing a huge rooster tail of mud chunks haha! these tires are great in the mud, water holes? not so much.

also went out to schultz pass and did some wheeling up there, most of it was pretty easy with a couple more fun spots, but my gf was *****ing about bouncing around, so i had to stay on the more boring stuff.

I've learned to never wheel alone, especially out in the Styx. Did you call the rescue fellas with the big yellow Chevys?

the only thing that would've gotten me out of this would be a propeller lol.

i cannot imagine a situation where that would not work, even being high centered it would lift you up and over, if you have more straps you could essentially make temporary mud boggers.

or....use the discount tire coupon on eBay and buy some Fierce(Goodyear) Attitude tires cheap. sale ends after tomorrow.
