This one sold for $43k in 2020, and that makes more sense to me because you got essentially a new 23 year old car. Only 5k miles, I often use it as a reference to see how things should of looked on my car.

I get paying $40k+ for one of these if it's like brand new, since if you really like it and you have a new car budget that's the closest thing you can get to buying a new 3rd gen. But with 100k+ miles, your a sucker if you think you cant find a better one for less money.

If that thing sells for that much money it has to be wash trading.

Pre pandemic, I spent an entire summer trying to GIVE away my '96 SR5 for $4k.

I had low ballers all summer long. No one ponied up.

Hagerty finally relented and started offering classic car insurance for it, and paying full pop for a summer only vehicle really pissed me off, and was the only reason I was selling.

They said yes, I said hooray, and her build out began.

As soon as I put an ARB on the front, suddenly, all manner of folks started coming out of the woodwork, asking "is the the truck you were trying to sell recently?"

Since then, the offers and hand wringing over "missing out", have only increased.

I have no idea what the psychological component of this is, but I had someone walk in last summer and offer me $15K. I said no, and I would, again.

But if we're talking values, what I'm really curious about, (since this is the only thing other than my house that has increased in value since I bought it), what does the changeover to EV's, and the eventual phasing out of gasoline, mean for values in the next few decades.....

I have wondered the same thing as well. I suspect that gasoline will be available for decades to come but at a nice little premium compared to today. Will something like a 4Runner hold any value then? Or just the collector cars that already command collector values? Or will scrapyards be full of 4Runners and other gasoline powered cars because they will be made worthless?

Would take $25k offer to get my attention on current project, not looking to start another atm.

Mine came out of the south at 95K on her, it saw two?, three? winters, fortunately I don't drive much so those miles were easily under 10K all in. I then stopped all winter use and got an Outback for daily driver duties.

Still had a good scale going on, a bit of rocker panel rot on the drivers side front, since I park on a slightly downhill spot that also leans driver side, so everything ran and collected there, passenger side is fine. Had that cut out and patched in two years ago, front door only, rear section was solid (phew!), then did NH Oil on it that year too.

For $200, they shot into all the doors, rockers, frame, as well as sprayed the whole underside. Since it's tinted black, it looks SO much better.

It flaked off the big chunks, had a quick retreat last summer for $50 to re-cover/soak those areas, and I think I'm good for a while.

WaxOyl is another one, but way cheaper than say Ziebart.

It never really gets hard, which is I suppose a plus and a minus, but I'm super happy with the results.

I am nearing some sort of retirment. I can buy most vehicles within reason and nothing really jazzes me. PARTICUALRLY dumping 65 - 75 k for something that owns you, in terms of self-service et al.

So when my son's super clean Utah-sold 4 runner popped a head gasket, I offered to take it off his hands. TO restore. I had done it to a Chevelle, so this should be easy, right!/

Not so much. Man, at 62, I'd do THREE old skool engine R&R's before one 99 Toyota again.

And I aint done putting it back in yet! My budget is well below 30K, without paying someone to paint the rig, which is mostly mint but for a few areas.

The worse repair below:

He joined this forum that year. He paid around $27K from a used car dealer in Oregon and was asking $25K for it on this forum; I actually suggested he list it on BAT, should've asked for some commission :laugh:
