Who's the next president?

Doing well??

Easy enough to say... wait til your Social Security disappears, Medicare disappears, Police and Fire service go to ruin, potholes appear in the roads.

Socialist Security is going to disappear -- and has been insolvent for quite some time. We had a chance (and could still do it with some difficulty) to "fix" it decades ago, but those in power chose to throw younger people under the bus by doing nothing about it except 'promising' that it will always be there.
:bash:

Medicare is a huge boondoggle that is about to get even worse. Unfortunately, the answer is just to throw more money at it and make all citizens wards of the state instead.

Our police and fire services here are actually pretty decent, but they're not run & administered by the federal government. Then again, local control of such functions does not run afoul of the US Constitution the way so many other programs do.
:p

Potholes have always been a problem, but they usually have more to do with ineptitude & waste than with lack of funding. But road building is usually left to the states. Even when federal dollars are spent, bear in mind that that 'federal' money comes from taxes collected from people in that same state.

Maybe it would work in some Libertarian utopia but it 's just plain old unrealistic.

I would hardly call a constitutional republic a "libertarian utopia" by any stretch - though it may be a small step in the right direction. You seem to confuse libertarianism with anarchy. While I am definitely not an ideologically-pure libertarian by any stretch of the imagination, I am still a minimalist when it comes to the role of government, particularly at the federal level.

Our Founding Fathers knew exactly what would result when a federal government had unchecked powers and could rule with an iron fist. We fought a war over that, sir.

There definitely is a role for government to play -- at the federal, state and local levels. The problem, however, is when too many people look to Washington, DC for some kind of "one size fits all" method of solving problems inherent to such a large nation. Obviously, what works in one state or region might not work so well elsewhere. (Again, the wisdom of our Founders shines through clearly.)

I typically favor having government (especially at the federal level) handling only things that people cannot do for themselves. Such stuff may include military operations, coining money, national security, regulating interstate commerce, running a court/justice system, etc., etc. Ironically, that is pretty much listed in Article I, Section 8 of our US Constitution.
:bigok:

The fact is we have some billionaires paying a lesser tax rate than normal middle class folks.

Could it be because too much of our tax code relies on chasing income -- rather than wealth? I don't know of too many billionaires who get their money from a "job" the same way you and I do.

If we had an honest, flat-rate, fair tax that was based on a percentage (without mulitple tiers), it is very likely that our government would actually generate more revenue and less money would find its way offshore. Like it or not, we in the middle classes are strongly affected when the "rich" people avoid taxes by spending their millions offshore rather than buying things made or sold by US citizens.

The rub is that so many in Washington (who occupy both sides of the aisle) would rather have fewer dollars and MORE POWER than to have more money coming into the coffers, but with LESS POWER. But this is what happens when the tax code is perceived as being used for 'social engineering' rather than its true purpose of generating revenue.
:(

You guys may be doing well, but you're not a litmus for the entire country. Btw, all taxes are a form of "spreading the wealth," get over it. Historically speaking the highest class of society is paying the lowest taxes ever, and Obama wants to raise it back to where Clinton had it. Our country is on the brink of disaster and the last thing we need is another 8 years of the same old failed policies.

You may think I am doing well, but that's obviously a relative term. I probably make close to the 'median' income in my area, plus a little bit more -- but I often work 55 to 60 hours a week, instead of 35 to 40 as most people do. I also generate a lot of revenue for my company - as opposed to taking up space or doing a "make work" job.
:awais:

Anyway, "spreading the wealth" sounds all fine and dandy; but why not find a way to enable more wealth to be created? Seems as though our friends on the left are not so concerned about doing the right thing here.

As for the "higher classes" paying less in taxes, that is one of those things that can be spun in many different ways. Once again, there is a huge chasm between wages and wealth.

Why should we design the tax code so that it will only serve to prevent people from becoming wealthy? The ones who already "got theirs" will just laugh it off and keep on clipping their dividend coupons. If the Democrats really are the party of the "working man," then why are such a huge percentage of the wealthiest people in Congress all Democrats? Those people care about "us" only when it serves to keep them in power ad infinitum.

I am still waiting for someone to show me where health care, education and retirement are itemized in the US Constitution as functions of the federal government. Then again, look at how many people think that "promoting the general welfare" somehow means putting everyone on welfare.
:girl:

If our leaders have so much disrespect for the US Constitution, why don't they simply amend it to make the aforementioned things federal duties? That would be the proper way to do things - instead of just ignoring or sh*tting all over it. So many of those chaps (in both parties) show utter contempt for limitations on their power and more often seem as though they have been 'annointed to govern' rather than being 'elected to serve'.

Imprimis

Yeah, I get Imprimis as well. I never signed up for it, but they just started sending it to me a few months ago.
:)

Good stuff, though. Apparently, that college doesn't accept any government money and they can actually concentrate on teaching students rather than indoctrinating them. LOL!!

Well, they apparently looked after some of their shareholders.

A colleague of mine just came back from Canada...he was visiting a friend of his who is a Pediatrician in Canada. His friend works only part of a week from 10 am to 3 pm. He plays golf the rest of the time and spends a lot of time with his family. Seeing patients is easy because all he has to do is swipe the patient's "credit card" and the bill goes to government. He does not take on any extra patients because it's not worth it. The pay is not all that great, but the lifestyle is easy. He is not afraid of lawyers because doctors and hospitals don't have a lot of wealth...so, it is not worth it for a lawyer to go after a doctor.

A patient may die in the hospital, but he is not worried about it because of the low lawsuit rates and the fact that government runs everything...so, it's not his fault. For example, a person can break a hip and have to wait for days/weeks before getting the OK for surgery. If that patient dies from a blood clot (Pulmonary embolism, which is a high risk in hip fractures), then the family has to deal with it. If you need a hip replacement at 65 years of age, then you may have to wait several years for surgery. Well, when you reach 70 years old, the government will decline your surgery because you are too old. The same goes for patients on kidney dialysis...when you reach 70 years old, you will get one treatment and will be sent home to die. The government must limit these things because they can't pay for everyone.

In contrast, i have a fairly functional patient on dialysis at my hospital today who is 95 years old. Under Canada's system, she would have died long time ago!

Canada healthcare system is not too bad...good lifestyle for the doctor...sure, you get less pay, but a lot less headache! Patients NEED YOU, not the other way around. Like public schooling here, a patient HAS to go to their local doctor whether you like it or not. So, doctors (even bad ones) will always have patients.

Again, this is from a friend of a colleague of mine...so, i have NOT confirmed any of the above...but it is not out of the question based on what i have read about Canada's system.

I have been hearing news from the big city hospitals around my area. They are anticipating Obama to win the elections. Thus, they are planning to cut the staff down in addition to limiting certain procedures/surgeries...all in anticipation of Obama's healthcare plan. A few of the big hospitals are panicking right now because they just opened new branches around the city.

Things are gonna change....

Oh yeah, sorry, i just wanted to add this post...i am not going to debate much more in this thread...FYI post.

Hmm...Very interesting info. As a doctor yourself, where do the doctors differ on opinion on the effectiveness of Obama's healthcare. Basically, to a doctor, why do some feel the positives outweigh the negatives or vice-versa.

Most doctors favor McCain...because some of them do make over $250k, but also because we all do NOT want universal healthcare.

Care to provide a link backing up the claim "most doctors support McCain"? Obama isn't proposing universal health care by the way. What type of Dr are you?

A damn good one! :p

Care to do your own search? I am tired of all this debate...sorry.

Obama had 100,000 people show up in downtown Denver and McCain had 4000 show up for him just yesterday but that still doesn't reflect how close this race is in Colorado.

My point is that I'm not willing to pay higher taxes to make sure everyone else gets health care.

This about sums up my view on this whole issue. I dont want to beat my own drum, but I work 2 jobs and I own a event planning business. I would hate to pay more taxes on the hard earned money I busted my a$$ for just so everyone is "taken care" of.

I think Darwin summed it up the best, "Survival of the fittest". This world is way too packed anyways....

Wow that sounds really morbid, but backed with passion.

And yes, despite being a "for-profit" hospital, we have to take care of EVERYONE AND ANYONE who comes to our ER.

Thai what do you do in the hospital? I am a cook at our local hospital (second job). My wife does admitting for the radiology dept.

Ok, hold on with all this tax raising uninformed talk. Obama's tax plan only raises taxes for households earning more than $250k/year. According to wikipedia, who's source is the US Census 2006, that is only 1.5% of families. If you are single the number is $200k

Yes I remember reading this somewhere. Wow that census data seems off....I gauranteed that more than 50% of the families in HI make less than $250k a year. At least we will see some relief. Sorry all you $250k + incomes...thanks for taking one for the team....hehe

No, but it is possible that no one will have the required number of electoral votes to win. If that is the case, the matter goes to the electoral college and they choose the next president. If that ever happened, it would make the Florida vote look like a sunny afternoon picnic.

I dont understand the whole electorial voting.....why doesn't every single vote count towards the winner. I know that would take a lot of time to digest...but doesnt the leader of this country deserve it. I would feel better about my voting if it actually counted on its own and not part of a general electorial vote.
