I think Lexus makes the best SUV on the planet...they make one for everyone.
RX330 is car-based with car ride. Perfect for those soccer-moms, and for those not wanting a truck ride but sit up high. I think the new RX330 will kick some serious butt in it's class.
GX470 is a perfect compromise of RX300's values and LX470's true SUV features. Good on-road and good off-road. Very nice.
LX470 is the ultimate in my opinion. It is world-renowned for it's off-roading capability and awesome reliability. At the same time, it is truly luxurious and is so darn quiet (as good as the Lexus LS400!).
Both LX and GX are TRUE SUV...not wimpy car-based all-independent minivans.
With Toyota being pretty rich these days, i think they will do well in their future designs.
Give them time and you will see Toyota/Lexus taking over. For cars, i am sure the next generation of IS and GS will be very competitive. LS is already proven.

Driving a BMW sport sedan with a 5 speed is a simply wonderful experience. I remember test driving one and I asked if I could drive longer. I am amazed at how far the automobile has come when I drove one. I would of bought a 328 instead of my 4Runner if I was just buying for me. But our family needed a bigger car. A SUV suited where we are, active family, camping, trips with lots of gear, and in the future, possible towing. The 4Runner was the best at what it does.
If I need a wonderful sedan, BMW is it.

The Germans are still the target. Won't be long until the Japanese surpass them, however. Especially with risky board decisions such as Chris Bangle! My theory is bmw has abondoned the notion of building cars for Germans/Europeans and has shifted focus to building cars for the North American market. Big mistake. It will give the Japanese the opening they need. But I lament because I see the beginning of the end. We all know that smaller companies can't just keep producing cars to please the enthusiasts if they want to grow. The time is near when bmw will make cars just to satisfy the need to run to the store for milk and bread before the snowstorm!

I agree with your opinion on the Germans. I think Mercedes is already down the path of making a average car. I am amazed at how cheap, for a Mercedes, their SUV that is built in Alabama is. You know that won Motor Trend Truck of the Year, what a joke. BMW is softing up too.
I also see the Toyota 4Runner going that way. The new look is more American. The clearance, payload and cargo area are all down. The ride is better. In order to sell more, I think you get a vehicle that is less extreme, more in the middle, if you will.
As for me, I would love it if BMW made a sedan that is all engine, brakes and handling. Skip the softer ride and bells and whistles.

I'd guess the big dilemma for the germans is how to grow their market while keeping the enthusiasts happy. I really hope bmw can do it. I was disgusted by the cheapness of the ML the first time I got in one. A friend had one the first year and it was endless problems. I think Merc has addressed most of them. Funny how perspectives differ though. I'm liking the changes to the new 4runner-although I've never owned one previously. More interior volume up front, better ride and more power. I'm looking for a multi-purpose vehicle that can be driven comfortably long distances, occasionally tow, handle snowstorms with ease and sometimes go off road. I'm looking at the new 4runner as a larger, more capable, X5, for 20K less! I was reading last night that bmw is bringing a CSL model to either the M3 or the new 6(?). That should satisfy your raw performance desires. Saw a barely used M3 for sale here--asking 44K. Hmmmm, 32-34 for a new 4runner or, an M3...with a 72 month payment.
Why not Volvo? This is a very fine car I have owned 5, a1969 was my first,got such good service out of this car that volvos are the only cars I have ever owned my others were a 1972 164E ,a 1979 244, 1989 240GL wagon, 1990 240DL the 89 90 I still drive everyday,both have over 160000 mi. and look and run just like new.This is my first 4 runner, have heard good things about the 4 runner its a 1995 v6, 4x4 seems to be a very solid built truck,but I guess time will tell it always does!

traits were there: high price [compared to 4R], and down on power, unless you consider the turbo, which then makes the $ harder yet to swallow. I'm not dissin the XC 90, or Volvo; you asked 'why' and this is why I'm not in one.
X5: FOXY, great handling, & quick - if you go 4.4. End of good news. Bad news: Poor off road, impractical for anything other than four passengers, & get the gun price.
ML320 : Not much to like here. Quasi-affordable, austere inside,
funky looks. Poor off road. If you're ok with funky looks [ok, maybe 'different'] I don't see how there has been one single ML sold since the FX 35 hit the ground. Cheaper, gorgeous interior, excellent handling, & quick. Again, no off road.
Just MHO, here, but worth the price.

I was considering the XC90, even with the turbo it felt sluggish, I guess it is because it weights 6000lbs. I really like the X3, the handling was awesome, and the FX45 and the 2.5XT Forester was just plain fun because they were fast. I ended up with a RX330 for my Luxury because lexus is toyota and toyota is the best automanufater IMHO. But BMW comes a very very very very close second.
I've got a golf buddy with an FX 45. We went to Myrlte Beach in it. After you get by the shock-factor design, it is a nice piece. solid
feel handling & quick; very nice fit & finish. The interior is awesome. The exterior sets you back, but it starts to grow on you. Not my kinda car, but well done.

Well considering my 4runner will probably be the most luxurious vehicle i will own.... im going to have to go with TOYOTA
but seriously.... not knowing much about luxury vehicles, audi's look real nice. my wife is in love with the TT
