why are 4runners called jeep-killers?

i'm not going to get into this debate, i am way to new to any real off road adventures, and never had any real work history w/ the other vehicles brought up.

What i do want to ask is how a quote comparing the FJ cruiser, and the defender has to do w/ others comments about the land cruiser?

IT was realing to get across the point that offroading was built into the design of the defender, negating the need for aftermarket upgrades.

Either way we all have 4Runners and like them for one reason or another, hence why we're here. All vehicles have pros & cons...take them through a mine field they'll all blow up....so be happy your 4Runners are envied or loved. ;o)

anywho, yes, the land rover is an incredible car off road, but i will never purchase one again. ive had my jeep, a land rover discovery, and my 4runner, and the land rover had more problems than the three put together. blown head gasket at 65k miles, cracked radiator, and the list goes on. my 4 runner is currently at 150k miles and running very strong

like i said, the land rovers are great cars, but i would never get another one

well from reading your posts you seem like the kind of person that knows your car fairly well, and i assume that you take care of it.....

i just had no automotive repair knowledge, so i was s.o.l. when it happened to me. i have a feeling you'll be ok

I will admit that there are two inherent "time bombs" in the Land Cruiser (head gasket and what's called the "pesky heater hose") that could take you down if you didn't do some PM. If you are going deep, you need to extend your diff breathers and pay attention to your front axle seals.

The T4R seems to have the rear axle seals as the "thing to watch", but haven't yet heard of any others.

I sold my last 2 Land Cruisers with 200K on the odo, and they are still running strong as far as I know. Bought the T4R with 144K and expect it to last to 300K if necessary.

haha, i just found out i had a rear right axle seal that was blown. i didn't know until i decided to go into a brake shop to look at the pulsation of my 4runner when braking.

Well mine has a bad rear end/3rdmember and a bad rear bumper thats it, but i hear the timing belt is also a headache if not done right.

Completely not on point, but I'm reading Michael Crichton's "Congo" and he mentioned Land Cruisers for getting through the jungle..

Also, I just finished reading Ken Follet's "Whiteout", and he also mentioned a Land Cruiser the bad guys planned on swiping as their getaway vehicle during a snow storm.

Both good books made better by their LC references. Now, I just need a book where the protagonist pulls out a Jeep with his LC, lol.

I dunno 'bout that, granted my data is purely anecdotal, but I go to Australia about every other month and am constantly checking out the cars and trucks on the road there (wish we could get some of their kick-ass Holden coups here...), but is seems to me I see a lot more LC's (and 4 door Hilux) than Defenders.

There are a lot of the mini Land Rovers there lately (the ones that look like a RAV4), but of course those are not the off roaders,

And it seems that most of the built 4x4's are the diesels.

Not many jeeps there.

But since you mentioned military, I have heard many things about humvees performing poorly in the gulf and now iraq wars. They are too heavy and can even start to sink in the sand. In contrast, insurgents use toyota pickups and fly across the desert.

H1 and the humvees suck! as one who has served over seas in Iraq and kuwait, they are slow, way too heavy(even more so with an extra 2500lbs in armor and not well suited for off-road usage. not to mention their lack of reliability. i distinctly remember having one blow a tranny and spray hot ATF all over inside the cab burning the driver and TC then catching on fire... as well as others just sh*ting out on the MSR with broken axles or any number of other things. sure they look cool and yes if its an up armored one it can take a HUGE blast and you can walk away from it but i will take a Toyota any day of the week over one

Jeep killers? That's the first time I've ever even heard that. So my answer would have to be that 4Runners really aren't called Jeep killers.

I think both are pretty much the same as far as capabilties. T4Rs might have an edge. Not sure. However, as far as dependability and reliability, T4Rs, and Toyotas in general, definately beat out, or kills anything Jeep and Chrysler put out.

I don't know about those new-fangled models, but my Brazilian '71 Ford-Willys do Brasil CJ5 with 6cyl Maverick engine and military tires goes places my US 4Runner can't even think about. That thing climbs mountain trails made for horses that my HiLux SW4 (Surf in Brazil) couldn't make the first turn on. I love my 4Runner, but a REAL Jeep (i.e CJ series) is serious fun. Did I mention no top and the folding windshield?
