Why are the roofs white on FJ's?

Do they have a purpose? I see that some school buses also now have white roofs. Whats the deal?

The buses just copied off of the FJ. They were jealous everytime a yellow FJ went buy. Seriously though only thing I can think of is to keep the inside cooler, but that is marginal. Personally, I think its totally terrible.

It's in character with the original FJs but I still prefer body color roof.

Yup, it's a throw back of the original FJ's. It's a pretty distinct look and I think you either like it or you don't...

I heard it was a retro type of thing too , but I honestly think its ugly as hell. If I ever buy an FJ the first stop will be the body shop for a color match roof.

Saw a white FJ in Dallas this week and it still didn't look right -- the roof and body were slightly different colors.

You have to be a big FJ fan to like it. Its like the newer 4Runners, you either like them or you hate them.

Talking with some old FJ owners and friends, FJs were designed to be offroad/safari/jungle/desert/mountain/etc vehicles. For most of these purposes, bright colors and differences in color help to distinguish it. If someones broken down in swamp lands, deserts, mountains, jungles, anything, they can be easily distinguished by anyone from far far away or an aircraft.
But FJs don't break down before their 50th birthday, so it doesnt really matter anyway.

The bad is that the success of the FJ could mean the next 4Runner will lose even more of it's off road heritage and become even softer.

The white roof doesn't bother me but Toyota will respond and offer body colored roofs probably next year since that alone will increase sales.

That's the TRD edition but I think body color roofs will become common on the FJs by the '09 model.

I hope they stick to the original models and don't offer a four door actually. If you want a four door, theres the 4runner, sequoia, highlander, even the tacoma.

Also, my FJ is the most comfortable 2 door I have ever seen. Suicide doors are perfect for getting in without disturbing the front seats. I dont see the need.

The crazy thing about that white roof is that it's like masked off and painted because you can feel the seam with your finger! There's nothing smooth or uniform about the paint job from the color to the white on the roof.

The dealer stated the FJC has a white roof because it is an offroad vehicle for safaris. If you are ever stuck and someone needs to see you from above, you can. He also mentioned something about ducktaping an X on the top if you out there and need helicoptor assistance in a jungle of course.
