I have been looking for a second vehicle for a little bit now and I stumbled across this fugly 85. The body is in decent shape but has a little bit of rust around the wheel wells. The interior is absolutely hideous! It's brown, dirty, broken, and disgusting! The drive train has 300k original miles on it and the transmission has no reverse.

The plus side is that it has brand new BFG A/T's and the price was very very good on the runner so I wasn't going to pass it up.

The plans, keep it for a month and sell it! :flipoff:

Actually... for now I'll restore the interior, clean up the body and replace the tranny. Long term plans for now is a rebuilt 22re, mild lift, 33's and 4.88's. I want to keep this runner clean so nothing crazy will be done to it.

Hello, im new to the forum. I just bought a 86 4Runner, i live in the mountains in CO so its hard for me to find good parts. Do you guys know of any good sites for less expensive parts? Im looking in particular for rear end shock/leaf springs stuff. Theres a bunch of places online but id rather follow the 4Runner users and the sites they prefer. Combined knowledge is always the best answer. If you read this Thank you for taking the time.

It smells like old dust and dirt.

I'm getting ready to completely strip the interior out. I am going to order a complete carpet kit, possibly fit some second get seats in it and fiberglass over all interior panels and re-paint/vinyl wrap.

I already have a line on another tranny that I'll pick up tonight. Most of my work today has been scouring the internet for a tranny at a decent price and researching interior bits and pieces.

I actually did find one but the guy wants $450 for it. Also, I don't really think that the R151F is any better than the W56. The gearing for 1st-3rd is a little taller but that's the only difference. I don't think there is much of a benifit to justify the extra expense.
 
The R141F has a 23 spline output, doesn't it?

I even offered to split gas with him and have him tow the Sammy. Nope, he depending money on the ugly bomb. He'll be sitting at home while we enjoy the most beautiful landscape on Earth.

I'm going to try and find an auto dimming homelink mirror. I still haven't figured out what I'm going to use the broadway mirror for. The lanyard holds my tacoma keys and the shard though. They both get used daily. As a matter as a fact, the shard was the first tool used on the 4runner to pry off some bs plastic piece off the passenger door. :D
 
Progress this weekend has been slow. I got the old tranny out which was a disgusting pain in the arse! There was 300k miles of crud under there which made it a slow and greasy task.

After a couple hours of several cycles of soaking in degreaser and pressure washing I finally got the two trannies clean. I plan on keeping the bad tranny and rebuilding it at some point.

I also have some seals, a tranny to xfer case gasket, shift boots and shift ball seat from marlin crawler on order. Once I get them in I'll swap the xfer case over to the new tranny. I'll also check on the rear main seal while I have the tranny out and replace that if necessary. I may just replace it anyways since it's a cheap seal and good insurance.

Hopefully I can have the runner up and going by next weekend if all the seals and parts show up from MC.

I have also decided instead of adding new carpet and making the interior plush, I will be taking more of a rugged approach. I have some black monstaliner on order. It's the same stuff I used in my 87 and I will line the inside tub the same way I did previously on my 87.
