Why do I NOT LIKE the 5th Generation?

I actually like a lot about the 5th gen, I will say the little things I may miss directly from my 4th gen would be those rear blind spot mirrors cheaper to modify, indirectly the v8 option. What to like about the 5th gen, I believe there to be more options in companies for modifications. Still just as capable only limited by its increased width, but with that comes definitely a more comfortable cabin, etc etc

We have a 5th Gen Limited, my biggest gripe about the 5th gen is the factory tune and the lack of a V8 option. They could have solved that with a econ/sport button at the bare minimum.
I think it's pretty good, but to be honest, I still like my 4th Gen more as an off-road truck. The 5th also doesn't seem to have as tight of a turning radius.
My favorite thing about the 5th gen is the interior, I think they did a great job with that.

I like everything about the 5th generations except the transfer case. I love the ability of my 4th gen to run in 4 wheel drive and open transfer case. Very useful in snow country where there is intermittent snowy/icy areas and dry pavement.

I don't like the styling. There's a word I use myself from time to time so this is not to offend anyone, but I think "aggressive" is just too pervasive. The 5th gen styling reeks of Toyota wanting the vehicle to look more aggressive.
Another example is the tailgate RAM logo on Dodge's latest pickups. If it gets any bigger, the truck will be attached to the badge instead of the other way around.

That was literally the exact reason we went with a 5th Gen Limited... it has the same/similar Torsen TC that was used in the 4th Gen and GX where you can lock/unlock the center.

Yet another reason. The ability to lock and unlock is very helpful in deep snow.

I'm aware that the 5th gen Limited has the same transfer case as my 4th gen but I'm not wild about the front end styling. Just my opinion though.

Form fit function, aesthetics are secondary to me.
I'll agree that the other trims look better... but I spend most of my time inside the truck and I anyways wanted a better interior coming from a 4th Gen SR5. The Torsen TC, real leather, heated/cooled seats, and all the other stuff you get in a Limited were welcome considering it's real world use case.
5th Gen was specifically bought as a city SUV, and from a drive train and trim standpoint, was the right decision for us.
I still own my 4th Gen, which is now a rough and tumble SR5 that wears MTs and is a dedicated off-road toy.
It's a unique situation... if I could only own one, I would lean towards something that has a more aggressive off-road package like the Trail, but I would be in the same boat as you, giving up the transfer case .

Like both ! Own both ! Mostly drive 5th (better seats) oldman !!! Like what I've done to 4th (son's) read mini build . 5th a glorified box on wheels but still capable off-road (very) ! Like 4th when we have weather just for safety factor being able switch 4hi on the fly . But each their own right ? Would jump ALL over a V8 07-09 right now if could find one West Coast medium miles , but would have no problem buying another 2010-13 trail . 2cents worth

Coming out of Edmonds, WA last night about 2000 hours was hit by a real hailstorm fast and furious, sticking to the ground immediately changed the situation 2 lane highway nowhere to pull over. Took it to 35 MPH and went into 4HI. Went back to 55 and made the ferry on time.

I like my 4th gen because it reminds me of my childhood (i am 17 now) I would also feel bad taking a 5th gen out on the trails and damaging a newer vehicle just because it would obviously drive the value down. I do believe that the v6 only route was good for Toyota because they have them in last gens tacoma and fj so there is no shortage of them,I am not worried about power because the v6 can pull my dirt bikes and if i want to go fast i have a LS swapped e46. But if i had the money i would definitely like to own a 5th gen but also keep my 4th

I got rid of my 4th gen in Nov. It was a black '07 SR5 with 74k on - Mint condition. I sold Lexi for $16,000 cash in less than a day.
Sometimes I still miss her cloth seats, running boards and not being as worried about wrecking stuff. Although, every morning when I hit my auto-start button and look out at the driveway to see my "Aggressive" 2018 TRD ORP in black...I'm not mad that I brought Lexi II home. Personally, I think the Gen 5s are way sexier. The wide stance doesn't bother me whatsoever and I got used to the turn radius real quickly.
Now I have a bunch of jealous friends and higher car payments. One of them just bought a used SR5 Premium in Barcelona red (still an extremely capable machine) and he's pissed after comparing all of our off-road options. But I told him so before he bought it :lock1:

We all like what we like and are entitled to our own opinions. That's what makes life great right?
Sounds like you should stick with your setup. You've got plenty more life on that thing.
I have driven a friend's 5th Gun a few times. I actually like it a lot. Sure, it does not have that sweet-driving V8 but the 6 it has is pretty good actually. The suspension is extremely nice too. When my 2005 gives up the ghost, I'd consider it for sure, along with a Lexus 4.6 for that V8.
