Why do threads get closed in the 5th gen section?

I was a SuperModerator over at a large Toyota forum. It's a dedication of time with no real reward. But it has it's own appeal.
Forums are a place to go and find comoradery with others that share your interest.
It should not be treated like a data based site.
I'm a member of several oher forums. And the ones that are sucessful are the ones that people are free to discuss anything they want, as long as it remotely deals with the topic. Like a group of friends getting together and hanging out!

IMHO! This forum isn't very group friendly. I come here for information and if I can try to help the other people that come here.

But I'm not a fan with how it is over Policed IMHO. Almost to the point of a dictatorship.

Sorry no offense just expressing my opinion.

The Forum is gauged by its traffic, advertisers pay more if there is more activity.
This forum has way more potential then is currently being used. But due to the unwelcoming atmosphere here limits it sucess.

Because the dude is on a bit of a power trip and runs things like he is the supreme leader. If HE thinks something is not worthy then lock away. Meanwhile he doesn't do crap about people constantly quoting picture heavy posts to simply reply with "cool."

Meanwhile, he is a dick to a lot of people. Example: some finance guy said he legally had to offer extended warranty coverage. Ole supreme leader comes in being an ass and gets proven wrong, deletes his post though it was quoted by someone before he did.

Why is he on such a high horse? Because a lot of people here kiss his ass and act like they are afraid of him. Really. It's quite sad. These guys are like Billy Boucher and ole 1mod is mama. "Mama said...mama said supercharger threads ain't allowed unless they got a truck to stick em into."

Ps- as for the person claiming that being a mod is hard. Lollies gtfo being a mod is far from hard. Climbing Everest is hard. Modding a board is a beer fart.

I have been a member for enough years to know that everything you have said is flat out wrong. I really feel sorry if this is what you believe as you are completely mistaken.

I am generally the first to poke fun at our mod, more than anyone I have seen and he has always taken it as humor.

Treat others as you wish to be treated. Btw you have broken the forum rules with your personal attack, in case you didn't read them. @1E probably won't do anything given your attack is directed at him but for your reference:

Are we really complaining about a mod who works hard to keep forums under control? I am on nasioc, evom, and Prius chat for many years nasioc for over 10. I have seen good mods and bad mods. I haven't seen 1E for too long but he does a great job that I have seen.

I don't care about a supercharger thread because it isn't released or have a press release on it. Until then it can be locked.

I get that people don't want their thread locked but I have seen so many stupid posts but also some good ones. If your thread is locked talk to him via pm. I'm sure he is doing it for a right reason not because he doesn't like you. And if you get upset don't be a whiny little stink. Happens too much on the subie forums now that prices have dropped to replace Honda ricer kids.

I find t4r.org to quite a bit more tame and relaxed than a certain other forum that caters to the compact Toyota truck crowd. There's so much noise over there that it's sometimes hard to get to the info you're looking for. It's a hard balance, to keep that sense of community without turning this place into just a bland information database while also trying to keep the noise to tolerable levels. I think 1engineer does a good job managing to keep things from running completely out of control. Maybe you just need some help. This place doesn't see as many posts as tacomaworld does but it's gotta be tough to be the only mod, even with the community helping out.

As someone who blocked 1engineer before he was a mod, I can say he's doing a fine, and imperfect job, of keeping order in here. Being a moderator is not a hard job, it is a thankless job. So I commend him for volunteering and doing his best.

You got a lot of hate built up bro, for just 6 posts...

Your immaturity and insecurity is clearly evident in what you write. Did 1engineer delete your prior posts....lol.

Anyway...the Mod job and climbing My. Everest are exactly alike for one good reason...time. They both require time to do a task.

Time is the one single most valuable resource we have that can't be replaced or duplicated.

So Greg spends his time trying daily to make this place better for everyone, with very little thanks.....even for whiney, crybaby douchebags like you.

1E did take a poll in the thread to see who wanted it closed. 1E also doesn't do things just to be an a-hole.

1E said the thread would re-open when the SC becomes available. There is seven years worth of SC threads to read through. All it does is get our hopes up then we're let down when nothing happens. It's all hearsay at this point. The IG Magnuson photo didn't even have a SC in it. Just an open hood. That's not good enough.

I've been here since 2012 (my account had to be re-made). I have never been be-littled or bossed around. I READ threads that are relevant to what I'm looking for, I try to act like a sane, respectful human being.... unless someone purposely pushes my buttons.

If you don't like it here, or the way you're treated..... It's really easy.... delete your account and don't come back.

^^^^was just about to write this verbatim....

I researched for well over 4 months before opening my mouth, and found 98% of the answers I needed.

Thanks to Greg for trying to keep this place somewhat organized and in-line.

If you can't take being spoken to in direct demeanor (whether you agree with it or not), feel free to delete your account and join one of the other T4R forums. No one is stopping you.

This place isn't perfect, but it's a great forum for many reasons.... Greg is one of them.

Post EDIT: my post is in no way an attempt to kiss anyone's a$$ or take a side... it's my perspective after 42 years of living. OP is very well respected contributor to this forum, and I myself have sought out his knowledge more than once. The point is, nothing nor no one is perfect (as OP has mentioned)... And doing a non-paid, thankless job isn't the top-Rated most fun things-to-do in most of our lives.... so take a breath, don't take anything personally, and have some fun.

....Onward with the original discussion of reasoning behind closing threads!

I for one really appreciate the stuff 1engineer has done for the forum. It's way more organized now than it ever was. Grouping all the similar threads together, the tire fitment guides and shutting down all the BS is exactly what a mod should be doing.

Sure he has deleted a few of my posts and moved at least one thread I started, but I now know exactly why he did it and they needed to be done. You can't hold that against any moderator.

My T4R wouldn't be even close to what it is today with out this place or these guys posting all the crazy things they do.........

I would like to say a public thanks to 1engineer, Antman, sp8ball, eddiebx, Titanpat57, philsey, ramonortiz55, ArrArr, harper7, phillyd2, rigtec, DannyLlama

I'm sure there are a few people ideas I've stolen that I'm forgetting, but you guys all rock!

Yeah, I am actually getting ready to retire from the mod world. It truly is a thankless job and I don't do well with people who just cant understand basic STEM subjects. I have a guy who wants to buy my 4Runner (I didn't have it for sale) and is willing to pay top dollar. I have been thinking of getting something different and the way I see it, I can make a lot of folks happy to leave here, get away from 4Runners and do something else.

Casting my vote for Stifler to be the new 5th gen moderator

I made a multi-page thread about OrangeBoxx sending me a poorly made rack that didn't fit to share the experience. It was informative and the vendor, much to their detriment, joined the thread and made things worse. The thread was locked because two random guys started arguing about Gobi and Trump.

Seems like the more sensible thing to do would have been to delete their posts, but instead someone decided to lock the entire thread. The issue has still not been resolved and I was planning on updating the thread, but now if I want to do that I have to create a new thread and link to the old thread. Given what I've seen on this forum, I wouldn't be surprised if my new thread was merged with the old locked thread.

I saw most of your thread and you do have a valid point, however no one is perfect. Did you PM 1engineer and state your case? Reopening the thread and deleting the BS posts seems like the right thing to do, though there may be another side to the story.

Never had a problem with Greg that I can recall and from what I've seen, he's pretty consistent and reasonable.

..... I think the guardrails should be: totally off topics and insults or personal attacks. Besides that... let it grow and gems will come out for those willing to look for them.....

You left out "politics", but we already know how -mod- deals with that.

:tape2:

Shit, I missed this. Well, a guy's gotta do what a guy's gotta do. I'd be sorry if this happens, but the occasional douchebag criticism must get tiresome. We'll sink back into anarchy, name-calling, and politics, Simpleman74 will revert back to Stifler , oh lordy.

I was going to wait until I had an update to PM the mods to ask them to reopen the thread. I'm sharing why my thread was closed to answer the OP's question of why threads get closed.

Man this thread has gone totally off topic....I did not intended for it to be a pot shot thread against 1E. Although I did want him to hear discussion about what people expect in terms of threads being closed...

The point was to find out why threads get closed... with one subject in particular in mind. An answer was given, but the answer still seemed no longer relevant. So the moderator (1E) opened the thread up again to see what happens. Perfectly reasonable!.... Now if ass hats want to go in there and clutter it up again with garbage banter....then that just sucks and I would hope their posts get deleted.

The rules should be simple. If you don't like a subject.. Ignore. If you want to argue and include personal attacks... take it elsewhere. The guardrails should be wide and the discussion fluid as long as it stays relevant in some way. Jokes from time to time are fine. Attacks.... not cool.

I've been attacked here before.. and its not fun because you have no way to face your attackers and explain anything rationally.... I may have even deserved it on occasion, but you cant make everyone happy and won't get along with everyone... Words on a page are often interpreted much differently than originally intended and people will paint a picture in their mind of you that is often totally different than reality. The internet often gets us all in a mode of hyperbole.

The playground/club politics do need to be kept to a minimal... People like to bully/protect... It always happens in special interest groups and the job of the moderator is to attempt to keep that to a minimal without killing the joy of discussing something that is pure recreation...

The problem is no moderation or hands off moderation ends up leading to the lunatics running the asylum.

If we have a lot of draconian moderation, that's not good either.

What people need to do is use the REPORT button more often, and realize that we need to police the threads ourselves. I'm all for joking here and there, but at the end of the day this forum is a technical, anecdotal, and experience, based resource for new and experienced 4Runner owners.

I know I get tired of seeing people, new forum people, get yelled at with the "dude, use the goddamn search button" line. But lets be honest, search doesn't help if threads are duplicated, cluttered, and way off topic.

I wish forums like this had an Editor (as in a job role) who could take stickied treads, and go through and prune them down to the most essential and thoughtful information.

I'm not disagreeing with you wfo9, but I don't think the "don't like a thread? ignore it" sounds great, when it just gives free license for people to just post dumb stuff ad nauseum. One piece of trash on the ground isn't a big deal, until everyone does it and we have a landfill full of litter on our streets.

I like that we're having this discussion of the forum on a bigger scale. I know not everyone gets along, or likes eachother, but the very fact that we're all talking about how to improve things, is a very good thing.

Dealing with dip shits that walk in, have been a member for less than a month, or with but a few posts, start posting crap that has already been said/answered dozens of times or just plain not reading, it gets annoying, that's why people get brackish. Seen it, often.

Example:
Best One Picture thread, it is a cool thread, yes the mod happened to start it. The rule is post your best one picture, no comments, no questions, just your best one picture. For the most part it works. Then someone drops in out of nowhere and says "Shit those are cool wheels where' you get them", "bro that's a great pic where was it", and it turns into a shit show and no more cool pics, just a bunch of banter.

Curious, climbed Everest have you? Modding a board is not physically hard, no, dealing with brats constantly is, this place gets like kindergarten before nap time... a lot. Just saying, it's got some personality that's for sure
Anyone who posts more than one pic in that thread should be suspended for not reading the rules, lol

As someone who stopped creating my own threads because it was clear I was too noobish for this forum and the experienced folks just couldn't stay away from them and had to be smart asses which I guarantee they wouldn't be if they were looking me in the face because they'd probably get popped ... I think 1e can be an ass...but he does do a very good job curating this 5th gen section. I'll give him that.

This forum would be a lot better if people treated other people with a little more respect and didn't talk down to them to boost their own ego. To me that takes more away from the forum than the duplicate sc threads which will eventually disappear and go to dead thread heaven.

At the end of the day more discussions like these only benefit the forum. New, experienced, whatever, we're all supposed to be in it together and should feel free to voice our opinions. This is Murica after all

I guess you guys could always start your own free forum

And there could be 2000 supercharger threads. Maybe even a sticky with a picture of an open hood

Also when someone does a search and comes up with an old thread, they get chastised for bringing up a necro thread, Cannot win either way.

My thoughts are to create a new thread for a new vehicle and not dig up old threads that does not pertain wholly and are full of shit stirring comments bashing the poster.
