Why does everyone extend their diff breather instead of...

I used them on my 3rd gen pickup. You don't even have to mod anything and its nice and clean.

so...does that thing just extend when pressure builds up? Is that the deal?
Thats kind of cool. If its well made and seals up well it does seem like a good alternative to extending the breather.(lazy mans alternative)

What is that, exactly? If it gets submerged, it could still draw water, right (not knowing what it is, tho)?

But, people (like me) do it to prevent water from entering the diff thru the breather if it gets submerged.

They expand and contract depending on the differential pressure. And it's $20...

I didn't go this route because when I was gonna do the breather I couldn't find one! So I just went with the extension. Had I known where to order one then... Yes I would have gotten it

There was another thread on here somewhere a few months back stating they aren't good for your rear axle seals. Not my opinion, just thought I'd throw that out there.

Because you can't put it on the front diff, transfer case, transmission, e-locker housing and the ADD housing.

Well you could, but you have put it on a hose extension anyway.

I bet I would rip that thing off on a twig or something.

The breather mod is a proven solution and it probably costs less to do than the shipping on that thing, but damn, $21?!!

Also, and most importantly, it reminds me of one of those power flush toilet plungers, lol.

If you're gonna catch that thing which would probably bend right past whatever you might get caught on it you will never survive having a breather hose.

That said, I've heard not so good things about those somehow blowing out seals. Never seen in happen in person, so take it for what you'd like.

I think the breather mod is the simplest, tried and true way to go anyhow. On my 1st gen I ran a hose to the very top of the engine bay and put a cheap ass VW fuel filter on it and was good to go. I didn't bother with the stock breather as I will never have ANY of my rigs that deep in water.

thought about it but end up doing the hose and filter way, just because its stronger and safer.

I asked Scotty from Addicted about those and he steered me away from them. Said that the they didn't expand enough or something (it was a while ago) and I should just extend my diff breather.
