Why don't the back doors unlock when the inside handle is pulled?

It would be really great if the passengers could just open the door when parked from inside without my having to unlock them with the drivers switch all the time.

The driver door opens without being first unlocked. I don't want all the doors to unlock when I open the driver door for security but can they be made to open with the handle inside?

It's probably a safety feature for kids.... we wouldn't want them pulling the handle and falling out.

Does the 4Runner have selectable safety switches to change this? I know that most other SUVs do....

I think it can be done

There is a child safety switch inside the rear doors. Look at the rear insdie of the door when you open it, near the latching mechanism. There is small toggle switch there I think.

And yes, I do type dyslexic!! I am pretty darn sick of editing every post I make!!

yeah it's a safety feature because I wouldn't want kids yanking on the handle either. and that switch toolman is talking about, i think, would actually disable opening the rear doors from the inside even if you pull on the handle and the door is unlocked.

The only cars I've known to do that is FORD. Not really high on my safty standards.

To add to the kids discussion about this, my son pulled the latch one time while on the highway. The doors weren't locked I freaked out. We were on a curve too, so the force was causing the door to open. It scared the piss out of him, and me. I lock the doors everytime now, and he doesn't touch the handles. A godd lesson learned, but it could have quite possibly ended a life. Oh the safty latch is on too now.

that's why you can set it so it auto locks once the car is moving or once the car is put into gear. keeps everyone's heads on their shoulders.

Read your manual that came with your T4R very carefully. In it is a proceedure
to make all the doors unlock when you unlock the drivers door.

The manual is not written clearly, but if you read it several times you will get the idea.
There are several other options mentioned in the manual also.

I have read the manual and understand the various options available.

I like that the doors lock when I start to drive. I just want to be able to open the doors in the back like I open the front doors.
I don't have to press the unlock button to open the front doors.

If the kid lock would disable the handle that is fine, I can turn that on or off. The way it is now, when everyone wants to get out I have to press the unlock switch at the drivers position or tell them how to unlock the door so they can get out.

I sell real estate and it is a real PIT.. for my customers to wait for me to remember to unlock their door so they can get out.

I can set the unlock feature so that the doors unlock when the drivers door is opened but that is not very good for security.

Oh well.

How do you set it that way? Right now when I put it in drive all the doors lock. Then when I stop driving and place it in park I have to unlock all of the doors including the front passenger door to get out. This gets annoying. I've only had the 4runner for a week.

Its in the manual. Should be the same place where it tells you how to set your locks to lock when taking out of drive.
