Having had punks try to break into my garage to steal car parts and perhaps the car as well, I certainly don't like advertising any of my personal information given the amount of money and time that I've put into my vehicles. Just personal preference, but people always say it won't happen to them until it does

If you have a vanity plate of your call sign (for RF folks), that call sign can be looked up (FCC License Data Search) and translated to a home address which is publicly visible (versus a DMV check against a normal plate which requires authorization). Robbery is generally a crime of opportunity (leaving your garage door open, leaving your car unlocked, displaying a plate that can be tracked back to where you live easily, wearing fancy jewelry in 3rd world countries), so there's no sense in making it easier for them by being stupid.

Its probably worth mentioning that there are websites that publish voter record info for quite a few states. If you can get a person's last name, you can get everything else; party affiliation, home address, phone number, age. And you cant request they take your info down because its public record :smash:

Speaking of public records, when i am going to do warranty work in a neighborhood that is not on Google maps yet, i sometimes use the county appraisal district website. If you own your home, your name, address, property info is all there for the world to see. A coworker of mine did not know this existed so i had him shoot me some names of family members who owned homes and guessed all their addresses correctly. And these sites are public heh heh. There is no privacy anymore

While this may be true, I believe it only returns the info from the FCC ULS system, assuming you didn't BS that info. It's very easy to change your FCC ULS info.

In order to run a license plate, you would need to have, or know someone who has access to DMV records. They would be risking their job and criminal prosecution to give out that information to an unauthorized person. Not likely. Also, what are the chances that someone with bad intent looking at forums would actually be in the same geographic area as the person who posted their plate? There are a lot more likely things to worry about, like the location tags on photos taken with a cell phone.
