Maybe because:
1) There's no sense in showing it if there aren't any on the lot to buy.
2) Until the official launch, the vast majority of people wouldn't know that it's the new 4Runner anyway.
3) It would make it harder to sell whatever 2009 models are left.
4) The ones spied on the road don't look anywhere near "production ready."
5) It adds to the mystery -- look at all the "spy" photos and speculation.

All good points. I know they don't like to leak things out. My guess is they don't want the current year model sales to fall off. I think this year might be an exception, since I think they have sold 18 total 2009's for far. So, what is the point of not letting us know, maybe because they want to sell 20. (The part of selling 18 cars is not really correct, but you get the idea.)
I would also add that they probably don't want their competition to see what styling cues they're gonna use. There are a few auto companies that basically just copy the designs of Toyota, look at the new Honda Insight for example - it looks just like the Prius.

If you go by the secret memo that says 4Runners are getting a 2.7 liter engine, it says the styling is going back to it's roots. Of course, can you trust that memo?

Why? 'cause it's gonna be fugly and look exactly the same as a Highlander. even the designers themslves know that.

While it is somewhat bothersome to me that he highlander, sequoia and LC all look like different sizes of practically the same vehicle (something I used to love to rag on Dodge and GM for doing..) I really like the looks of all of the new Toyota line-up and provided the 4Runner doesn't go the IRS route and lose all of its rugged appeal, I'm sure that I'll like that design too.
When did the designers themselves say its gonna fugly (I actually highly doubt they use that word since it kind of lacks intellect) and that its gonna look exactly the same as the highlander??

they did say it, they just knew it, that's why they hid it.
I'd add RAV4 to the list of look-alikes. That means all Toyota SUV's look the same, except for the size.
I don't think that design is bad, but I would call it "boring". No real flair to it - just a sterile SUV shape. I don't care if the 2010 4Runner goes back to its roots - just please let it be more distinctive than the other models.

Years ago when the 4th gen pictures finally came out the reaction was pretty negative - I expect the same this time...

The problem with the LC design is that it is so ultra conservative that it lacks any defining character. It's got the stylistic flavor of a white refrigerator. No risk no reward. While there is nothing to point at and say I hate "X" the converse is true and there is nothing to look at and say I love "Y". Even the old LC had some love it or hate it features, like the vents near the rear windows or the body cladding. I'd like to see some originality in the 5th gen's styling. Hopefully Toyota will take some calculated risks.
