Why hide license plates in images?

You obviously havnt been a victim and probably live in hickville USA, where everybody and their sister knows each other by first and last name. Right? Because if you lived in The City, your sh*t will be gone in less than "60 seconds", I kid you not.

Most ignorant people will only choose to learn from their own mistakes, rather then taking advice from other people who have already been there, and done that. Like I've already stated, there are people who just think they are invincible, big, bad, individuals. They always learn the hard way.

Just wait till something happens to you, then you'll look back and say, "Damn, why didn't I listen?" So go on and keep your keys in your ignition, your wallet in your 4R, your windows wide open, your house unlocked, and your mind free from fear. Just don't come to The City with that mentality or you'll get sh*t outta luck real fast. :hello:

Hicksville? I don't think so. I've lived in New York for my entire life. Believe me when I say that I'm 99.9% more likely to run into trouble in my daily life than by posting a picture of my license plate. I'm also quite sure that I'm older than you, judging by your choice of words and your general attitude, so please don't think you've been anywhere or done anything that I haven't.

Just for the record, I never said that I keep my keys in the ignition or my house unlocked. Doing that is just begging for trouble. Posting a pic of your plate on the Internet is absolutely nothing in comparison.

Everyone here seems to be focusing on "cyber stalkers". Well, guess what folks-- there are just as many (if not more) regular stalkers that you pass every day in your life. Too bad it's illegal to cover your plate when you're driving/parked/home--then you'd be able to be anonymous forever!!

I guess it comes down to the fact that I don't need to hide who I am on the Internet. Besides, if you guys really think about it, most of you reveal enough personal information about yourselves on this message forum that anyone with half a brain could figure out who you are and where you live. Take Thai for instance--without even searching through his posts, I can recall just from reading a few of his posts that he's a doctor from Texas who loves SUVs and owns a black Mercedes G and a Toyota Corrola. Sure, that may not be very much info, but keep in mind that was off the top of my head without any digging. I'm sure I could discover much more info if I starting researching his posts.

To me, a screen name is like a CB handle; you're not supposed to use your own name. What's the fun in that? Most of us choose screen names that have some sort of meaning to us, right? And I've already mentioned that I'm from New York, probably in multiple threads. I guess I was too lazy to put it in my profile.

I've never been one to cover my license plate. Who cares really? Besides, if they could look i up, the address on record is two behind where I'm curently living now. Like others have said, I'd rather not live in fear. I think too many people are overly paranoid these days.

Sure things have changed in some ways due to the internet, but I think a lot of the same type of things happened "back in the day" but there just wasn't as much awareness. It's not as though there were the glory days when everything was perfect..... it was just harder to hear about the bad things. I don't think we have misinterpreted the "living in fear" thing at all. We are talking about the same meaning here..... You are going out of your way (no matter how far it may be... big or small) to try and protect yourself out of fear. Thus, you are living in fear.

Just keep doing what you do that makes you happy, and I'll do the same. One day, you'll figure it out. It doesn't matter on your age or how well someone chooses to use their choice of words. I`m on a dog training forum that requires every single one of it`s over 3000 members to display their real first and last name. If they don`t they`re banned. Nobody has had any trouble with that policy. I don`t blurr my license plate. Go ahead and check the gallery under "introducing me and my 4Runner". I have a retractable steel police baton within easy reach of me in my 4Runner and if I`m home I have 3 large dogs who would be very vocal about somebody coming onto the property. I`m not living in fear but at the same time I don`t openly give my exact address out over the internet. Me being a 16 year old girl who has received harassing calls on the phone that`s just something I don`t do. What I meant by saying all this is that everybody has different comfort levels with giving out info. Some don`t want you to know who they are or have any way of finding it out and others will give you everything right down to their exact address and when they will be home. And some people might even have a good reason for you not to know where they are. The police were notified about the calls by the way. That b*stard only has to call one more time for us to have the required # of traced calls. I know he is a student at my high school so I`m not concerned that he`ll find this forum.

It's really amazing to see how strongly people feel on both sides of this issue! I never thought it was that big of a deal!

I don't think the point here is to tell people what to do, but rather that people are making an informed decision. The Internet age has changed the world considerably, and information that used to be private or reserved for law enforcement agencies only is now readily available. That's the downside of government records being public. In the past, such records were on paper, and it was impractical to collect lots of info on any one person. With the age of computers, you can now collect data on millions of people very easily and then re-sell it on the Internet.

You hear about incidents all the time now about sexual predators getting what seems like "harmless" information off of MySpace.com or Facebook.com and finding kids and doing nasty things. Don't ever think that what you post here or on any Web site is somehow private or only used by the intended audience (like other forum members). There are lots of unregistered users lurking and just gathering info.

So do what you want with your license plates. But just know that it takes very little effort to get a real name and address from a plate number if someone really wanted it.

And if you think that's bad, also know that it's now possible to fake caller ID, so don't trust that little display anymore, either! Just because caller ID says it's your bank calling doesn't mean it's really them! Always call people back if they want personal information and know who you're calling.

Common sense tells me that I shouldn't cross a busy highway without looking both ways first. Why? Simple--for fear of getting killed by a car.

Common sense tells me that I shouldn't walk in the middle of the train tracks with my MP3 player blasting in my ears. Why? Simple-- the fear of getting killed by a train.

Common sense tells me that I shouldn't leave my house unlocked at night or duing the day when I'm away. Why? Simple-- the fear of getting robbed and/or killed by an intruder.

Posting pictures of my license plate? Well, common sense tells me that's about as risky as taking a swim in the pool. Sorry, but not much fear there.

Notice that our common sense protects of from this that we fear. That's exactly why so many of you seem to be living in fear. And there's nothing wrong with that, if that's the way you choose to live your life.

Botton line you understand why some choose to block out their plate. You can make your own decisions on what you feel you want to do.

Although this thread got a little testy & heated at time's and lot's of different opinion's ( which is a good thing ). If you choose to post your plate , address, whatever personal information you want is all up to you. Weather you choose to post that or choose not to post that, I do not wish anybody here anything but good experience's in what ever they choose to do.

You've got to remember we drive 4Runners , we are a superior class of people in all aspect's
