Why I hate mud.

So figured we would head up on the mountain for some Independence day trail running and mild rock crawling. DENIED!!!! Colorado Springs finest were blocking the trailhead. Due to all the fires recently, they are keeping people off the trails coming out of the Springs. Can't say I blame them. Not wanting to drive 2 hours just to get another trail we decide to hit a local wheeling spot in town. It has a few challenges, but it is not in the mountains.

First challenge, creek bed. Creek 1 - FOG 0

It did give me a chance to test the new winch. Works GREAT! Pulled me right out.

Actually, Bill schooled me on a hill today that I couldn't climb. I wish I had more power in my motor and a locker or two :D





FWIW: playing in the mud is fun but it is not worth the cleaning effort. We spent a good few hours cleaning up after a whole 2 minutes in the mud. NEVER AGAIN!!!

Amen to that!!! I am done with mud pits for life. I don't mind splashing a little along the course of a trail, but it ends there.
 
Sure sounds like you guys have a ton of fun. Really need to find a wheeling buddy out here lol. But I agree with you guys; never understood the appeal to mudding. Never have taken my 4Runner through mud holes and don't ever plan to haha.
 
Yeah, mud is great fun while you're in it, but any pasttime that includes a 2:1 cleaning to fun ratio is not high on my list.

That pit looked deep.
 
I would HIGHLY recommend putting the solid doors back on before hitting mud the next time around--cleaning sheetmetal is one thing, scrubbing upholstery and carpeting is a whole different animal. Playing in mud IS a lot of fun, but the inevitable clean-up is certainly not!

My kids wanted to get dirty! LOL! Where's your sense of adventure. Had we not been wheeling 10 minutes from the carwash and home, I would never have done this. My carpets and seats needed a serious cleaning anyway.
 
I got stuck it a mud pit on a logging road, and it was a bit nerve-wracking because I had my son with me, it was getting dark, and we were 10km from the main road. I got out, even with the nearly bald and undersized Grabbers the rig had when I bought it.

Spent the summer digging mud out of my cracks. :toilet3:

It was fine since we would have just camped (we have all the gear in back to survive), but it is a little embarrassing and idiotic.

Luckily it got out in 4WD LO with the center diff locked.


I'd do it again except for the cleaning involved.
 
Mud is inevitable around here.. sometimes you tiptoe through it, some times you just need to hammer down! Haha. Looks like a good time guys!
 
When I was in Ohio, mud was THE answer for tough wheeling, unlike here in the Black Hills where rock is king. The mud you find around here is either clay or shale, so you don't sink very far, but it's insanely slick, and you can't steer for squat. Ohio had "gumbo" mud, especially along powerline trails. Best thing to remember--MOMENTUM! Not necessarily balls-to-the-wall, but steady movement until you're clear, keeping the tires slinging the goo out of the tread as you go.
 
So, FoG and myself were supposed to go wheeling tonight and get some dirt on my new tires. Well, we both have bad batteries and I'm starting to have a persistent cooling issue. I need to get my cooling system flushed and replace my battery. Bill needs to replace his battery as well as neither of our batteries are holding a charge!

You must be related to the female species!! You are a lot of fun to play in for a a few minutes. But then you require hours of maintenance and like to make our lives a nightmare. I say now that I will never play in you again! Like many, I am a weak man who is easily tempted! I will stay strong and resist you every time we meet!

It isn't called mud where I live. It's liquid/soft clay. The damn stuff is impossible to get off your rig.

It took 2.5 hrs to get this snowplow out this mud. His front end bumper guard aka snowplow plunged head first into this pit, and his rear hitch receiver got hung up on that big rock behind him. :ybrick:It doesn't seem too bad in the pictures because we lifted him onto some woods and rocks. Then we winched him out. His read diff was wedged on a rock and that dumbass front bumper thing was wedgede in. We didn't want to leave his diff or radiator mount behind.

This was his initiation run, so we asked for it. But it's part of the game. Remove your snowplows people.

I'll be the oddball

I will be the one to cast a vote in favor of mud. Yes it can be a pain to clean up, but I also dont stage dive into it like I saw in the video. Here's why I like the squish better....
