Why is my T4R doing this...

I have a 97 T4R Limited. 3.4

I cant seem to figure out why when I cruise around 45-55mph in curtain spots of the pedal when I give it some acceleration it will start to jitter the motor almost like the motor is not getting all of its power..like its cutting out or something.

If I let off the acceleration it will go away, or if I smash the pedal in it will go away..

I don't know what it could be..And I am worried about DD it around like I have been.

Anyone have any ideas that could solve this problem?

Change your spark plugs and wires.

Drive ability diagnostic over the internet really isn't that easy. Nothing pops into my head as common on these vehicles for those particular symptoms either.

I would start with: new spark plugs (ngk or denso), clean the maf, and a bottle of injector cleaner (redline is my preferred brand).

Beyond that I would find someone or purchase a scan tool that shows real time data so you know what is going on with the engine when the problem occurs.

Check the easy stuff first, but that also sounds like it could be a knock sensor issue as well.

It could be a knock sensor if it was over 3000rpms putting the motor under load. Due to noise, the knock sensors on our trucks only will monitor over 3000rpms. If below, the motor can be pinging and knocking and the ecu would never know.

I'm with kball and stick figure, change wires, plugs. Clean maf and do a little injector cleaning or seafoam.

The vague description made me think of my old cars. 84 Mustang, 83 Crown Vic, 82 Toyota pickup, 96 Sable(god I have owned too many Fords), one or 2 of my mothers cars.... all had a Throttle Position Sensor go out. It was like the engine would quit getting gas at certain spots of the peddle (push it down 1/4 and theirs nothing, go just past or before that and it was fine) I am not even sure our trucks have one tho, I can't imagine why not but I could be wrong. Plus I just woke up so that description could of just went over my head. Anyway I wish you luck in finding the problem and hope someone here can be helpful.:hatsoff:

Could be anything from

Fuel pump - measure fuel pressure I don't recall the pressure specs off the top of my head
MAF - Try cleaning it. If this doesn't help any, this could still be a possible problem without tripping any codes. Any delay or RPM drop with sudden throttle opening?
TPS - Range can be tested with voltmeter (a graphing variety is better, since you'll see any spikes or sudden dips more readily)
Clogged cat---IIRC, this can be tested by monitoring vacuum. If there's little difference between idle and higher RPMs, could be clogged --happen to me

Your truck is hesitating because it's afraid of you. Include truck in your daily routine and talk to truck about your feelings. And give it a burrito, trucks like burrito's.


My t4r was acting like yours as well. It felt like it was in the drivetrain and happened at like 50mph. I changed the plugs and wires and the symptoms went away. It didn't want the burrito though.

Thanks for all the thoughts. I went and got an oil change today, and spark plugs are changed, and it is still doing it. Ill half to look up how to clean MAF and do wires.

And I made sure to leave him a burrito for dinner haha.
