Why my 4th gen has no visible antenna? and the 5th gen has it?

I couldn't believe my 5th gen 4R had a mast antenna. Too bad technology isn't up to par with just combining the shark fin xm antenna and the reg radio. But like Duhockey said, who listens to terrestrial radio anymore? The new radio has XM, BT streaming, aux jack, ipod connect, usb for thumbdrives, CD/MP3/WMA player. All terrestrial radio has is commercials. The only good thing about the fixed mast antenna (besides being a weapon) is my kids finally get to put an antenna ball on it (previous cars were power antenna or in the windshield).

even XM radio anymore has a bunch of commercials on it. 9 times out of 10 i end up turning on the IPOD, or i BT slacker radio off the crackberry thru the truck. besides, after my former experience with XM and not receiving a refund for over 2 months, and their horrible quality of customer service, i will probably not be a repeat customer again. i got my free 90 days...maybe some day I'll put it on again, dunno tho.


good answer on the radio stuff btw....i could never figure out in my 4th gen why if i had the IPOD charging i'd get the whistle while driving if it was running music as well. Makes sense now.

Aa car mounted antennas are compromises between good antenna design and good car design and cost. It's much easier to make a good mast antenna than it is to put one in a window. At least the 2010's don't use the electric antenna we had on our 95 SR5. I had to replace the motor 4 times on that one. I don't really mind ht emast - it's not that noticable from the driver's seat.
