Wife sales job driving our 4runnr into the ground

As a husband how do you not lose your scene and go off on your wife's employer? I'm cryig here asour Gen 4 is getting beat up in sales road miles.

Wife took a sales job to get out of a previous nightmare job. Took a cut in pay - ouch - but commissions might someday get her over that (yeah right). I told her to negotiate the $350 monthly gas allowance to drive her car into the ground. She didn't because she is so beat down from her previous employer she doesn't want to make waves with these new cheap arses. So now she's logging around 2500 miles a month which is 30K a year in our previously low mileage, mint Gen 4!

I figure her gas cost her $460 in a month minus the $360 they reimburse. Her fellow sales force doesn't have a territory as far. So right there its fubar. What to do...

I feel your pain. The wife and I both drive about 24 miles one way to our jobs that are minutes apart. The kicker is our schedules are totally different so we can't ride together. So basically I have two vehicles that are using gas and adding up the miles. Tell your wife to keep looking for a different job or go buy a beater car like someone else said.

My boyfriend goes through the same thing with his job. Some days he has to drive 50+ miles one way. He got a rather new Subaru about a month or 2 after starting this job and 3 years later, it's falling apart inside and out. He didn't realize he would drive so much for work and didn't plan to have a work car separate from a personal car. His boss won't give him extra for gas money either. At least he gets decent mileage. He's looking into getting a truck now, but that's another expense. At least in these months he can use our motorcycle sometimes for non-work driving.

Let her handle things with her boss alone, but like other people said, you need a separate work car because that car will take a lot of abuse

My father has a 38 mile commute each way and both my sisters have a 55+ mile each way commute and none of them get fuel money from their jobs, the OP is refering to have to drive whilst working not driving too and from a workplace each day, and his subaru falling apart is more the way he treats it, because my dads jetta which has 270k miles and he is pretty rough on it, and it has only a handful of things broken and its an 11 year old VW!!!

You are right that he has been rather rough on his and driven it a lot beyond just work. He wants a truck he can keep in good shape and I know he's happy he didn't put a car he cared a lot about through what he's put his car through. If the OP wants the 4runner to not get beat up, his wife needs a different car to drive.

As for durability, you got it backwards! There is no way any production VW will outlast a Subaru...any Subaru for that matter! Now, for performance or sexiness, then yeah, i agree with what you wrote.

Ummm, WHAT!? have you forgotten about the WRX, STI, and XT forester? they are much quicker than VW's and they have a proper AWD system!

But yes VW gasoline motors sometimes lack some the durabilty engineering that their diesel counterparts have, and some of the interior plastics break. They are not as durable as toyotas but i do feel that their reputation is worse than it actually, but your correct that their are underlying issues in some cases.

i stand corrected...i am just thinking about old man Subarus. However, WRX etc. are not really good looking either.

For me, i prefer what Mitsu did with the EVO AWD system over the WRX....

I just bought a 2001 Toyota Camry in Mint condition, silver w/ only 80,000 miles. It has a 4CYL auto and gets 29 MPG.

Now lets look at your situation:

Assuming you get $0.55 mile and also get 29 MPG then you would make $0.412 dollars per mile after gas is subtracted, assuming gas is @ $4 per gallon. So if you drive 2500 miles per month => you would get to keep $1030 cash after spending money on gas.

If you had the same car I do ..... with car payment of $195 over 48 months + insurance is only $40 extra for the 2nd car like me. => that leaves $795 to spend on something else.

Fast forward 4 years ... that is 120,000 miles later. You will pocket $795 a month until the car is paid off in 4 years. => You will have pocketed $38,160 in cash AFTER paying insurance + gas + loan.

At that point the loan is payed off and you get to keep the still running Camry.

Now I know I didn't include maintenance but come on people it is a CAMRY .. the maintenance won't be that bad.

The way I see it, she took the job, if she knew before hand, that she would be doing lots of driving, with no gas allowance, and said yes, to the job, there is no one to blame but her.
If she knew everything before, she accepted the job offer, she and you have no room to complain, that would like someone buying a new house, reading and signing all the docs, then crying about the HOA.
If she failed to asked these questions, before accepting the offer, who is to blame ? that blame IMHO would fall on both, the employer and her, her for not asking, and the employer for not letting her know.

i drive for work and use my 4runner. i can go from 10 miles a day to 300 a day. just depends what i am doing. but my job pays me per mile. 55 cents. which is more than enough. maybe she should ask about switching to that kind of deal?

other than that id get her a vespa.
