Will 275/65/17 BFG AT KO's rub?

At long last I finally have a 4 runner. It is a 2006 sport. I am in need of some new tires before winter. It has the stock Dunlops on it right now. I think I am going to get the BFG AT KO's and I would like to go with the largest size possible without having to lift, trim or mess up the speedo too much. I was thinking the extra 5 mm per side over the stock 265's and sticking with the stock 65 series shouldn't cause any issues, but I can't afford to make a mistake. Any advise or experience you guys have would be greatly appreciated.

I have that size of BFGs on my 06 2wd sport ed. They are very close to rubbing on my front sway bar at full lock. I had to have the tire installer put on the weights that stick in the inner surface of the rim. I have a pretty hi lift and that seems to draw the tires in closer to the suspension. Without a lift you'd probably not have a problem.

Guys with the AT KO in 265/70R17 report ever so slight rubbing on the upper control arm ar full steering lock. This is somewhat due to the square shoulder on that particular tire. I would imagine the 275, being wider, would be worse. It will be a little shorter so might just come below the UCA. I don't know of manyone running that size. If you want to be sure, stick with the 265/70R17. Many people have those so you can get an idea of how it works. (Basically it will rub, but not enough that people seem to care).

Thanks for the feedback so far. Will 4R, the 265/70/17 was more of a diameter change than I wanted to do being over 3%.

WoodyC, I don't understand why the weights needed to be inside the rim? Also do you have any pictures of your vehicle with these tires on it?

I checked mine out for clearance and the tightest spots are the inner surface of the sidewall next to the suspension arm with the bump on it and it is about 11mm clear to the stock tire, and as you mentioned, the front sway bar at full lock, which has reasonable clearance on the stock tire.

bfg at ko in the 275/65/17 are 31.2 & e load, 265/70/17 are 31.8 & come in c or e, 265/65/17 are 30.7 & e load. this is from tireracks site. i believe this is one reason why some go with the 265/70 since it can be had in c load. alot dont like the way an e rides. your speedo being off 3% or 2 mph difference is small & only shows when your going about 60mph, so you'ed be doing 62, thats too hard to remember to compensate for? if so, stick with the 265/65, but i think they only come in the e.

I had the BFG AT KO in 265/70/17 on stock suspension and there was a very slight rub at 3/4 lock. The tire was rubbing the splash guard (mudflap) very slightly.

now I have a daystar lift and spidertraxx and it rubs slightly at anything over 3/4 lock.

and with any upsized tire, acceleration and fuel economy were changed.

***EDIT*** the reason the tire rubs is mainly due to the width of the tire. the 275 is going to be wider than the 265. which means you're going to have more rubbing with the 275/65 than the 265/70. the 275/65 will be a lower profile tire, and will not throw your speedo as much, but honestly the 3% speedo change is not noticable at all anyways.

Thanks for the feedback. I am now being tempted to consider the 265/70 size instead of the 275/65. I am aware the the calculated fuel economy loss, but is the real loss significant? ie. $$/ month. Regarding performance, is the loss of acceleration significant? How is the handling affected? I might consider going with a Michelin LTX over the KO to reduce the chance of rubbing with the square profile.

With my lift the rim was pulled in a little closer to the suspension and the edge of the rim was VERY close to the sway bar and the weights would hit on full lock turns. The tire installer installed the stick on weights on the inner surface of the rim. Now with the BFG KOs 275/65 17s I don't notice any rubbing.
