I'll most likely put the box spring on the roof, but didn't know if the mattress would fit inside...
Will a full size mattress fit in a 2001 4Runner?

A standard full-size mattress is 53-inches wide. The cargo area of a 3rd gen is approximately 48-inches wide. (Basically you can get a sheet of plywood in the back, but barely, so in general you can think of the cargo area as 4' by 8'.)
It might fit. Depends on how much bend you can put into it. My guess—and it's a total guess—is that you could get it in there, but you'll probably need a couple of people to help you load it and bend it, and you might have to bungee the rear hatch door closed.

Even if you could fit it width wise, it's too long. I suppose you could fold it like a taco and hang it out the rear window, but who wants to do that with a brand new mattress?

I did this a couple weeks ago with a queen. I put the mattress on first then the box spring, and then I just used some ratchet straps. It worked out just fine.

I've moved every year I've been in school and yeah you can...you kinda gotta talk to it though, but it'll fit
