Will a T4R be able to pull a 22' boat out of the water

You will be fine, take everyone's advise and install a seperate tranny cooler and tundra brakes. Keep it out of OD unless it's a downhill or flat and you are just cruising. Leave ECT on.
As for bringing it out of the water, in 4LOW you will pull it out without even trying. No need for a rear locker. Good luck!

i would never tow 5000lbs w a 3rd gen. ever. i dont even like towing 2-3000lbs. and i tow all year long, on flat ground (except for bridges), and braking is a struggle w stock brakes. never had a close call really, but just because I always keep my distance w a trailer in tow.

can a 3rd gen tow it, sure. will it be pleasant. hell no.

While I disagree with Cordray's hesitance to tow up to capacity, he is totally right about situational awareness. The tow rating assumes typical TOWING conditions, not typical not-knowing-how-to-drive-while-towing conditions. Even conservative/over engineering is forced to draw the line somewhere (usually that somewhere is good ole' fashioned physics).

Brake upgrade I think is the 1st thing you should consider. Then the tranny cooler; you don't KNOW you'll over heat, but you KNOW you'll have to hit the brakes. If you are going to do some longer trips then I think a scanguage is a very good idea too so you can monitor your tranny temps. It's a bit expensive, but I think it's worth it.

I don't think I would say hesitance Nelson. I'm very experienced w towing. It was a job at one time. I just don't recommend. It depends on how each individual trailer is set up and how they are balanced. As most of you know an improperly balanced trailer can cause some serious shit to go down at moments notice. It's a matter of choosing the most logical vehicle for what you will do most.

2000 T4R towing a HewesCraft 20ft boat

I have no problem towing my new 2018 HewsCraft 180 Pro V ET (loa with Extension back @ 20'8") I know this is an OLD review,but hate to add another Towing Boats Reviews on the trends. My boat probably weights about 3200 with a 48 gal. fuel and trailer,but I only need 24 gal.of fuel for what I do on the Delta. If I do need to add 48 gals. for Offshore fishing at the Golden Gate bridge for Albacore tuna, than it will be it.The trailers is a new 2018 SB Trailer with a double axle and disk surge style braking with the new automatic greaser hubs. Pulling this on my 2000 T4R with a factory Locker that I never use,pulling it with no struggle. I do have a 6 coil Mishimoto fan cooler thats keeps the transmission nice and cool during the one way of 70 miles to Rio Vista on the Delta....The boat is a welded aluminum hull with an Honda 115hp,its very light when pulling it and no struggles on getting it on the freeways,grade hills feels with no problem as well and at the Altamont Pass,it will keep me on the 2nd lane with no problem passing the 18 wheelers.<a href="http://s1056.photobucket.com/user/xratedracer/media/HewesCraft%20180%20ProV%20ET/S85_0626.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1056.photobucket.com/albums/t376/xratedracer/HewesCraft%20180%20ProV%20ET/S85_0626.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo S85_0626.jpg"/></a>

I tow a 22' walkaround with a 2015 SR5, factory towing package. Boat, motor and trailer are about 4300lbs. i tow it 100 miles a couple of times a year, up to 20 miles at other times. I never have an issue. I did install a transmission oil cooler befoer I started towing.
