Reason I ask is im having a dilemma. factory remote start is $1100 here in canada and remote aftermarket start is like $400 . I like the 400 but i heard it can void warranty. is this true? Also does any1 have a factory remote start? is the range horrible and does it turn off when u open door?

Void what in warranty? I had a Viper system installed just after purchase for the exact reasons you note. It was done at a competent retailer who is certified by Viper (tech receives their specialized training they aren't reading instructions).
Are you worried the product will start a fire and burn the vehicle to the ground? I would bet that is highly unlikely with a qualified installer and an excellent product ( please don't go to Canadian Tire ). Will it drain your battery to nothing and kill it repeatedly? See prior sentence. Then I would suspect you'd be on the hook at the dealer for diagnosis and replacement of that, after they pull the fuse on your product. :thumb:

I have a factory remote start and it works well from inside my house. It’s no more than ~80 feet from the truck. One thing people dislike about the factory remote start is that it shuts down when you unlock and open the door. I think it’s a great security feature for it to turn off and don’t mind.

They have some pretty fancy ones otherwise but I didn't need all that.
I can pop my hatch with the side remote button, thats an option in programming. I also like being able to activate the sequence and pull the key from the ignition / lock the truck and leave it running ( while darting into the variety store etc. ). We've had some pretty cold days this winter so I enjoyed that feature.

I have the OEM remote start—was already on vehicle—and a Viper system with remote start. Personally I like the Viper a lot more and almost never use the OEM. The Viper is actually useful in summers and winters with a dog in the car.
I got my Viper System on an amazon warehouse deal for $175, $40 in additional modules, and $100 to install. I later upgraded some modules, but base price was just over $300.

After market remote start or security won't automatically void your warranty. If, by chance, the installer does a terrible job and somehow fries some electronics/wiring, in that case the warranty claim would most likely be denied and you and/or the installing shop would be on the hook for any and all charges for the repair. Find a reputable shop that sells either DEI (Viper, Clifford, Python, Avital) or Compustar (my favorite by far) and you'll be OK.
FWIW, my 2008 4Runner has an old Avital alarm/remote start that I installed 10 years ago, no issues ever. My 2014 4Runner has a full Compustar alarm/remote start/Drone mobile (highly recommend this) with no issues as well.
It's very rare for one of these alarm/remote start systems to go out or even damage the electronics of a vehicle. It's far more common to have a half-assed install that causes all sorts of issues with both the vehicle and alarm/remote start system. As long as you go with a good installer, you shouldn't have any issues.

Just leased a new 4runner for my mother, and the salesman actually recommended that we used a different shop for her remote start because the ones the dealership were installed were to expensive. He said it definitely won't ruin her warranty unless the installers were totally incompetent at the job and crossed all the wires thus making the vehicle go up in flames! You should be fine. I plan to put one in my T4R as soon as the snow starts flying again later this year.
