will trans go bad from long term non operation

I've got a '98 limited that I've had parked for about 1 1/2 years. Is there any danger of the Auto Transmission being damaged from not being driven for such a long time ? I know that the Mopar torqflite tranny's would start slipping if the bands were allowed to dry out from not being driven. I want to buy a new engine for my 4 runner but not if there's a chance that the transmission might give out from sitting.

If you want to be extra cautious do two drain and fills. Use Toyota fluid. Drive and call it a day. The only way to know is if you drive it. It isn't as if you can disable it to check.

I would say there is very little to zero problem with letting a well maintained (eg good clean fluid) trans sit for a year. If it isn't derivable because is your engine problems them you'll just have to go with the fact that it's probably fine.

Lots of folks, including me, have left our 4Runner parked for a 9 month deployment and come back to 0 transmission issues.

Mine sat more or less for 5yrs. I did have tranny fluid chgd a few months prior to it sitting.

It had minimal use as I was on other side of country and my buddy did drive it very sparingly. 5yrs ltr hopped on a plane and drove it back approx. 3500miles and she purred like a kitten whole time. Im no mechanic but if your fluid looks good and you chk it per your owners manual, I would think you'd be good.

Like I said, Im no mechanic but it's an example with no issues.

Mine was sitting since 2005. Started, ran, drove in 2019 no problems. Torque converter whines but thats to be expected after 241k lol. Just flush it and youll be good!
