Will you keep your 4runner if gas hits $8 a gallon?

Will never happen because of our (USA) HUGE natural/oil resources. Our land is truly blessed. (And no, i am not religious but one cannot deny how rich our land is.)
Now, if a future President decides to ignore what we have and pursue some dumba$$ agenda resulting in us going back to importing tons of oil and be reliant on Middle East, then yeah gas prices may go up. IF that happens, then yeah, i will buy a cheaper transportation vehicle and my LC becomes a weekend car only. In fact, right now, i drive 100 miles everyday...and mostly i use my minivan for that.

Yes. I didn't buy the 4runner for the MPG. All our vehicles would be considered "gas guzzlers" by city folk.

Well, you never know. Seems that the Democrats are pushing to end fracking and new drilling. Along with the “New Green Deal,” and the push to eliminate all fossil fuels, we could see a huge jump in gas taxes to discourage use.
I also have a Mazda MX-5 that gets, literally, double the mileage of my 4runner. If I drive it easy, I can get close to 40mpg. I drive at least 50 miles a day so I’ve been using that for my commuter car and saving the 4runner for road trips and beach driving.

And we could stop importing oil from Asia and buying junk from China but then you would complain that you don’t have any money from your investments. It’s a simple solution if you want to give up your investments. Can’t have it both ways. Don’t forget that the current group in charge has had plenty of opportunities to do things better, but they are very invested in the world markets. Greed is our problem.

It doesn’t get trashed. I put it away from Dec 1st to April 1st to avoid driving it in snow and salt. But it’s great the other 8 months of the year.

If gas hit 2$/L in Canada I would likely have to ditch the V8 4runner. However, due to people jumping ship to EVs/Hybrids I wonder if gas prices might go down a bit to remain competitive so people don't start buying EVs as fast.
Oil companies should realize that if gas prices go up people will starting moving to Electric Vehicles faster.

My '07 will still be with me if gas hits $10, $20, or $30 a gallon. Too many mods, too many memories. I intend to make a cross-country trip with it, do some wheeling out west one day, and after that it will be my weekend/project truck.
But if gas did actually get up to $8 a gallon, I'm pretty sure I'd turn my daily into a Tesla or other electric vehicle. There's a lot of cool ones coming down the pipe in the next few years, and they're soon about to be cheaper than ICE cars.

Even at $10 a gallon, gas may be the cheaper part of driving. I don't know. But everytime gas has been inflated, i kept driving what I had. Just cost too much to change. The new loan, the new payments, the new insurance, then new tags, etc etc etc. I did pay attention to how I used my foot though. Amazing how much gas is wasted by poor driving habits, not to mention brakes, tires and everything else.
So probably yes, I will keep driving what i have. that said an electric pickup with great range might be fun. No more oil changes, simply no maintainable parts. Just recycle it when it gets old. Oh wait, how do you recycle the batteries? Guess you can do that too. Maybe autonomous motorcycle before I'm too old to ride. :bluejump:

Do you realize that the vast majority of electricity is produced from the burning of fossil fuels? 63% from the burning of fossil fuels, 20% from nuclear energy and only around 17% from renewable sources. If, tomorrow, everyone switched to EVs, there wouldn’t be enough electricity to charge them. California already had rolling blackouts this summer because of the heat. What if millions of people tried plugging in their cars each night?

The only problem is that electricity isn’t free. Where I live, electricity rates have already seen a sharp increase and they were just approved for another 10% increase. As EVs grow in number and the demand for the electricity spikes, rates will follow. It will soon cost you more to charge your EV than it does to fill up at the pump. And the mining it will take to produce the metals to make these billions of batteries will dwarf drilling that occurs for fossil fuels.

Oh yeah I don't think everyone could have an EV tomorrow due to the amount of resources we have, apparently there isn't even enough cobalt/precious metals to build EVs for everyone. But in 20 or so years its likely the only new vehicles you'll be able to buy will be EV due to world governments regulations so they better figure something out.

You’re probably right. We’re definitely headed that way. I just wonder if the resources, mining and energy needed to produce all these electric vehicles along with all the additional electricity we will need to produce to power these vehicles will really be any better than just using petroleum.

Where I live electricity prices have been declining - in real dollars, pre-inflation. We also run on 100% renewable energy nearly all the time. That story is increasing accurate for most of the US, at least nearly everywhere that is politically red or purple. The only significant outlier in the US is Nebraska, which has a government-owned statewide grid - they are paying more and are very late to the wind/solar investment.
That is not meant as a political statement as much as an observation - Texas, Midwest, Rockies have all had flat or declining electricity costs while seeing an increasingly greened grid. California and the Northeast see increasing costs but really no greener electricity sourcing.
Noting the Rhode Island location, the villain is mostly New York State. Gov. Cuomo has been holding his New England neighbors hostage. No new electric lines and no gas pipelines (necessary as a backup power source to renewables).
As noted, the ability to integrate a large number of home-based vehicle chargers is not good either. Without market forces that incentivize re-engineering the grid to support new loads in new places, there will be pinch points and some places at the end of the line, such as Rhode Island, that will be big losers.

If gas hit that high the 4runner would be the least of my worries. Paying for food would be number one on the list.

And as wise as Charlie is this situation is put into perspective....
Both the boyfriend and I have gas-guzzling vehicles but have both talked about getting two-wheel methods of transportation.
So yes.
