Win 10

I got the free 'invite' in early June and clicked for my reservation then. The Windows 10 icon has been in my taskbar (lower right) since then UNTIL this morning, now it's gone. What does that mean? If I go to my Windows Update it still shows the 'Windows 10 coming soon' bubble but it will not let me click on it.

well finally its installed.

  1. the meaty stuff is more hidden than win8 was (harder to find)
  2. NVidia drivers for win10 still feel like beta (still crashing)
  3. ms edge still in beta (imo), I would use IE 11 that's also installed
    • ran into a fun issue if there is malware code on a webpage, the edge browser will get into a warning loop and you cant get out unless you kill the task
  4. slow to load to the login screen and after login, feels like I am at work logging into the network
    • running 32gb ram, GTX 970 SLI, X79 mb, i7-4820K Ivy Bridge-E Quad-Core 3.7GHz, so it shouldn't be that sluggish with a fresh install
  5. games seem to be ok so far, played diablo 3 for about 5-10 mins. haven't tried others yet
that's what I have seen so far.

So basically this is just for OEM units that run a "factory" Win 10 vs. say a brand new box of Win 10 from the store?

Honestly the privacy issues are somewhat bothersome, but it seems mainly linked with the whole Cortana junk and I really have no use for that. I mainly want the performance boosts and better OS than Win 8 (god I hate Win 8.) But I do find that executable thing both bothersome and unsurprising, it makes sense though.

I've been trying to install Windows 10 for the last few days now... I signed up for the early upgrade a while back and got the notice that I am ready for the upgrade a few days ago, but it just keeps telling me that it is downloading in the background and has said that for the last few days. Anyone have any ideas?

I figure 10 can't be worse than 8 or 8.1... I hate Windows 8, and this laptop has been nothing but trouble since it was new. I kinda want a Mac but can't justify the price of one... I really wish technology would just work. There's nothing more frustrating to me than something that is supposed to make your life better/simpler that doesn't work and just makes it more aggravating.

So, how does one get rid of the annoying popup "YOUR FREE (Windows 10)UPGRADE IS WAITING...."?

I have no intention of screwing with a perfectly satisfactory WIN 7 Pro OS. I'll keep this laptop 'til it dies, and deal with WINXX then.

Uninstall Update for Windows KB3035583

then hide it so it doesn't install again.

It's funny I have the Win 10 icon on my 2010 thinkPad, without a touch screen, with old on board nVidia video and I am sure will not be able to run it.

I'm an idiot

Well, after getting tired of seeing "you are eligible for windows10 update", I caved. Installed it and for the most part, it's cool. So far my only gripe is that my cooling fan is seemingly always on high. Very annoying, can't seem to find a fix. Tried this: https://www.reddit.com/r/Windows10/...ntime_broker_and_why_is_it_constantly/ctm6y2e

Any ideas or should I just wait for a patch from microsoft?

"sigh" Should've on splurged and got an iMac..........................

Look for updates from your motherboard manufacturer... Best to go to the hardware manufacturer first. I had a little problem with my audio till I went to SB's website and DLed the latest driver. Everything good now.

iMac? Going to get a Subaru after your 4Runner's fan clutch goes bad too? :D

Using it. I'll take Windows 7 over this ANY day. It still tops Windows 8. I think I prefer Windows ME to 8.

Window sucks.

Apple sucks.

Linux sucks.

Chrome sucks.

I should just bust out my Commodore 64.

what no TRS-80, pfft.

anyway, I like it, but then again I have tweaked it back to win7 setup since I am running win 10 pro.

currently only 1 game I have issues with, world of tanks, CTD about every 60 minutes of continuous gameplay.

Oh boy: Microsoft has no plans to tell us what?s in Windows patches | Ars Technica

From article: This means that future patches are going to continue to say nothing more than "This update includes improvements to enhance the functionality of Windows 10."

A commenter: "You can't opt out of any Windows Updates in Win10 to begin with. Microsoft decides what lives on the computer instead of the user.

As a power user, this is unacceptable. I control the computer. I control the OS. I will bend Windows 10 to my will. And if they make that impossible, I will stay with Windows 7 until these issues are resolved.

I have Windows 10 installed on one of my laptops for testing. I want to like the OS. But Microsoft is going out of their way to irritate me."

Link: Windows 10 claimed to phone home despite privacy settings - SlashGear

"...all keyboard input is stored in temporary files and then sent over to Microsoft telemetry servers. In short, a built-in keylogger. This is rather strange if you factor in that there is no autocorrect functionality in Windows 10. Plus, the logging and sending of data happens even when a non-Microsoft Account is used to log into the desktop. Keyboard input, both from hardware and onscreen, include phone numbers and even passwords.

Allegedly, when the microphone is enabled, all voice input is also recorded and sent to Microsoft servers. When a camera is enabled, the first 35 MB of data similarly gets sent to Microsoft. All of these even when, for example, Cortana is disabled, which negates the need for sending analytics over to some remote server."
