Winch bumper(SSO or C4Fab)/winch

Does the wireless remote take batteries or is it rechargable? I am looking at doing SSO slimline with that exact winch if they do a group buy or black friday sale or something. The wireless remote feature is a big selling point to me as long as it's still a good reliable winch

Following this question and looking for more SSO installation comments.

Don't forget the warn hybrid. Neighbor has the sso Vinsil. Side by side the warn looks a little beefier the tube is bigger and the winch comes out the front vs the bottom angle. Ordered from summit had it in 2 days. Shipping box said 80 lbs or so. Sorry don't have the exact for it. Front did sag a little with 5100s set at 1.79 ordered dobisons medium duty today from Mike for a 2.5 lift.

Looks good. The Warn is probably my 1st choice due to quick shipping, comes powdercoated and the winch opening position. I am hoping to find a deal and will likely wait and see if there are any Black Friday discounts.

I personally went with the C4fab.

I have a Smittybilt X2O procomp12k winch with synthetic line, and a 20" light bar. I have slight sag on Bilstien suspension.
Yes she is a daily driver. But I want to be able to go on adventures and not have to worry as much.

***Disclaimer***
I upgraded my brakes prior to installing the bumper, so my braking distance is still shorter then stock with bumper and winch onboard.

These are 2 reasons why I went with C4fab.

1. The cross bar has gusset supports welded in (adds strength and rigidity).
For that oh $#!+ tie a line and pull moment.
2. The anchor points for the Shackles are a bit lower (almost inline with the winch opening. They don't stick out past the front edge of the bumper. (i.e. Shin wackers). The anchor point are also online with the frame mounts, not above.

Had C4fab made an aluminum option I would have jumped on that!

Synthetic rope. I went with the Smittybilt 10,000# X20 because I wanted wireless remote.

That was a major reason why I went with the X2O as well. and it is IP68 rated.

It does come with a backup cord for hard wire in the event the battery dies.
Which is a 23a for those who are wondering.

We could shoot side by side pics for those wondering. Love the fact you have zero wait time for the Warn. But most likely will be adding the high clearance wings so glad we waited on SSO. Very happy with the product.

I does take batteries, but it will also connect directly to the winch if the battery should be dead.

For what you need, just buy a ratcheting winch (Come Along). About $50 and go spend the other $700 on something else.

I love the looks of the SSO bumper. I would put a Warn 8,000 w/ cable winch in it. However, I just put Bilstein 5100 set at 0.85 and stock size BFG KO2s on the other day. I love the way it looks now and don't want it to sag with unneeded weight from a bumper/winch combo.

So, I've decided to not do this mod at this time.

I went with a Warn hybrid/hidden since it was in stock and I could get it within a week.
Install was fairly easy and I like that it has extra bracketing to the frame.
Shipping Weight was 88 lbs.
I added a Tigershark 9500SR to it, so total weight was around 150lb.
The TS doesn't need a solenoid relocation with that bumper.

The front end dropped enough that I will do something about it. Maybe some spacers as a temporary measure but will ultimately swap out the springs and shocks when I have time.

I've been looking at it, an I'm thinking of modding a Warn winch remote to work with the TS. The TS wireless remote is overpriced IMO. The warn remote looks like it'll be easier to use with gloves on (Most of my winching ends up being during snow season)

I at about 70k miles since I had the SSO installed. I have added a slightly heavier spring to offset the weight and had to accept a 2" lift to do that. But I would still do it again. I consider it one of my better investments. No problems with any excess wear on front end components. Hefty now makes an aluminum version of the SSO bumper, but it will be more expensive due to the material. I also don't know what the weight difference would be.
I suspect the answer to this question is somewhere in your build thread, but I am still trying to navigate T4R.org. Apologies. My SSO front bumper is inbound, and I plan to drop-in WARN 8000 with synthetic. My rig dolphined big time when someone cut me off in the rain today. Had I had the bumper and winch installed on OEM suspension, the idiot would have tasted my front bumper.

What suspension upgrades did you make, and what recommendations, having put a decent amount of miles on the rig, can you give?

My rig is used 80% for road use, 10% for off-road work (muddy, steep vineyards -- where I need a winch) and over-landing with RTT and fridge.

Front - Bilstein 5100 set at 0 with OME 2885 medium springs (2" lift). These almost perfectly offset the weight of the bumper and winch while retain an almost factory ride quality. There is still some nose dive but not as bad.

Rear - Bilstein 5100 and Toytec +10% Superflex springs. These are 2" lift springs but if you are unloaded they are actually more like 2.5". I carry so much gear in the back that wasn't a problem. After I installed the CBI rear bumper I lost the 2" back to a factory ride height so I installed a pair of Dobinsons C59-327 springs. Fully loaded I have my 2" back and it rides great. If I remove all the gear from the back it rides a little stiff but is not rough. The link below is for the Robinsons thread so you can peruse their choices. With the load you cited above either the +10% Toytec's should be fine, or maybe the C59-325 at the link. If you think you may be adding more to your rear load I'd go with the -327's I just installed, but you'll want to leave some gear loaded to smooth the ride.

Dobinsons 5th Gen T4R Suspension options - lots of choices

Just a nudge, but below this post is a picture of my ride and below that are 2 links. One to my build thread and the other to a trip thread I posted a few years ago. A lot of us who have build threads will have links to them in our signature lines like that. Good luck.

I personally like the SSO better, but then I have one. I am just not crazy about the winch access holes in the front of the C4. The SSO is also a tad lighter than the C4.

As far as the weight goes, the bumper and winch adds about 130# to the front. As I have a Toytec Ultimate with upgraded springs, I don't think there is an issue with front end components.

Mine is a daily driver, but when I do go off road, I want it to be capable. I had a 2008 Rubicon that I got stuck more than once without the benefit of a winch. Don't need that anymore.

I also like the fact that the C4 and the SSO have recovery points on the bumper. I know the 4 runner has recovery points in front, but they low and under the front trim so if you ever used them there would likely be damage to the front.

The weight of the bumper and winch does not seem to impact performance or mileage. The worst mileage I have ever got has been 18.0 in 7,000 miles.

Bill

They are not rated for recovery. They are there for transport tie down points. I have used them as a recovery point though with the expectation that at some point it will snap off.

Thanks for the deets. Very helpful.

My original plan was to run with OME Nitro's and OME coils, but this thread has made me realize there are far more variables at play. Is there any reason you decided to mix and match components (OME, Bilstein, Robinson, Toytec), as opposed to staying with one manufacturer across all components?

OME seems to have a very solid R/D protocol on Toyotas (and Nissans) for decades. I can't find solid data, other than subjective threads, on mix and matching different suspension components.

Lol. No rhyme or reason behind it. I was fine with factory rear springs until I started adding gear. The Toytec's were bought used off the for sale thread in here, then a few years later after adding the rear bumper I needed more rear spring again. I actually reseerched the OME's and Dobinsons after the bumper additions at each end though. Mine was a 5 year gradual build so it evolved as I went. Unfortunately that all ended on Jan 29th of this year. Da White Whale is no more after an early morning single vehicle accident. I'm planning a post about it later once I'm out of mourning for its loss.

That sucks. Sorry to hear about the loss. And thanks for the honest explanation. I plan to stick with my OME specific upgrade to accommodate my new additions. I’ll report back on my findings.
