winch mounting ideas

I don't know where you wheel but if I left that in a front or rear hitch like that it would be totally destroyed in less than an hour lol. I'm sure it would work just fine for some, but its just not for me

i see you wheel your rig like a bada$$.... your lift and all? what do you have for a lift 1" spacers or 99 tall coils?, your clevis hooks you have on the front of your rig are all good for pulling out your 3wheeler when it gets stuck and thats about it, your stock skids should protect you from leaves... come on man dont go knocking other people who have built rigs and wheel the piss out of them. i have wheeled my rigs all up and down the west coast, from TSF, to the rubicon/fordye to LNF -only an idiot would leave their winch on the bumper if they knew it was in danger of getting crushed... thats the joy and beauty of the mobile mount IT CAN BE REMOVED if not needed. but then cause your such a bada$$ you will always need the winch and therefor leave it in and let it get crushed... your obviously just an interenet wheeler who clearly doesnt know what your talking about and only wants to trash on reputable companies such as ARB and WARN Industries, and people who actually do wheel. have a nice day

Why wouldn't the bumper pull itself out if it was being winched on. It looks like it would stretch out like an accordion.

That is because it is 'engineered' - those are crush zones for the airbag compliance (certified in Oz for the Tacoma) and those engineers know what they are doing. They are designed so they won't stretch out (maybe if you dropped the truck from a bridge with the cable tied to the bridge) but will crush in an accident so the airbag sensors operator properly (since the force in an accident is going to be many times that of a winch pull).

I'm not against anyone making a winch mount or bumper - there are some great ones on this forum. I was just suggesting that if I (and I only) were going to do it I would try to build it as stout as possible so bolts don't rip out of frames or distort the frame when pulling up or down. That would include boxing the frame and using as many attachment points as possible and practical. But then again, I have a tendancy to overbuild things.

Its been a little while, but I finally had a chance to cut some pieces out for the winch mount at work. Extending the front frame rails 4in at the top and 2in at the bottom with a new crossmember to fit the winch mounting plate. 2x3 11g tubing, same as the existing frame rail. I'll be getting everything mocked up and hopefully tacked in place tomorrow.

Already in the process of making my own, but that one looks pretty slick!
My front crossmember will be held on with more than 2 bolts though :thumb:

No fooling! The bolts really should be just to hold it in place until you can weld it up. I was going to make my own but the C channel I was looking at cost almost as much as this part WITHOUT the nuts welded on for the winch mount. Fortunately these guys are the next town north of me so I think I'll swing by and see if I can get a cusomized version...

Oh yeah and I picked this little guy up over the weekend. That's where the new found motivation came from. $100 bucks for a warn M8000? uhh yess!

Nice score.

Hard a 2way toggle switch into the housing. Just cost you a switch and then get a replacement remote when the opportunity arises.

Well got everything tacked in place for the most part, but I ran out of shielding gas. The extensions are sleeved on the inside, welded then welded and ground on the outside. I welded nuts on the inside for bolting on the winch plate and then boxed in the ends.

Total I have $100 in winch and plate, $15 in tubing and $9 in grade 8 bolts.

Hopefully I can get a new tank tomorrow and finish up.

Well it should have been done today, but I couldent get anymore shielding gas :redbrick: mine won't be too hidden, Its pretty much impossible with out a fatlip bumper like you said. After I put on my 1'' body lift I will still have to cut out a 1.5''x 20'' section of my chrome bumper. That's with the winch plate in as far as it will possibly go. My main goal was just to get it in as close as possible so that it won't kill my approach angle and I won't be hitting it on things. Looks come 2nd

yep Ill look in to doing the in cab controls it sounds like a good idea. I might send you a PM with a few questions when the time comes.

everything is not welded up but I had to see what it is going to look like.
with no body lift I had to do VERY minimal trimming to the bumper. with the 1in body lift it should clear no problem.

only down side is its hard as hell to get to the free spool lever.... witch doesn't work anyways for some reason?

That looks really good, most of the ones I have seen with the regular bumper mounted them under the frame rails. I am sure it would be fine, but it looked a little low in my opinion, not bad at all, just a little low. The freespool lever was something that worried me as well, I might try clocking it so it sticks out the front instead of on top where it will be almost inaccessible. I already have a 1.5" body lift so after seeing this and reading what you've said, I am excited to get it on there. Hopefully I can get my welding tank filled and some 2x3 tubing this week.

Looks good. I might copy your mounting idea. Does the fair lead decrease your approach angle at all? Do you think if you clock the winch the free spool leaver would be more accessible?
