IMO anything 8klbs or over will be just fine. I have a 10k, but that's just what happened to fit my budget/needs at the time. If you're used to an 8274, you'll know not all ratings are equal. An 8274 IIRC will stall at about 14,000lbs. Gonna be hard to fit one on the 4runner though.

I believe the rule of thumb is 1.5 - 2 x the weight of the buggy it needs to pull out. So at at minimum 9500# is what you are after. Get a snatch block or 2 and you should be able to pull yourself out of anything.

Mine is a 2013 so a dif front end but: Superwinch Talon 12.5 w/ 3/8" wire rope. Budbuilt hidden winch plate. Relocated the solenoid off to the side, plenty of room, no cutting/tweaking required.
Same dimensions a 9.5.
The thing spools wicked fast.
I choose a larger pull rating simply because the winch motor won't have to work as hard to do the same work as a lower rated winch (the difference is price was a no brainer, $30), of course the downside is you have to be more careful when you pull.

I am happy with 9,500 and a synthetic line. Took a course on winching which included a lot of winching and it worked great.

Yes, this is Warn's recommendation. So a question: do you factor in additional weight for mods ? they can add up..... Anybody install a Warn 10,000 lb in a C4 Fab Low-Pro ? Wondering if there are fitment issues

Yes. You absolutely factor in the curb weight with mods. I run a 10k winch and I think my vehicle is sitting at about 6200 fully loaded.

Thanks for the reply. Interestingly though, when speaking to Warn customer service, they said that the 10,000 is plenty winch for our Runners (if you do the math 6,300 GVWR (2014 4x4) times 1.5 = 9,450). Not much room for Mods. (read later posts for clarification on this as its not correct info)

It’s 1.5 times the vehicle weight. 4runners aren’t 6300lbs normally.
A 10k is plenty even for a fat truck like mine.

Curb Weight vs GVW
Yes, the GVWR is different than the curb weight. Curb weight is around 5000#, IIRC. I don't have the spec's in front of me. The GVWR (GVW?) is about 1500# more than stock curb weight. This includes all mods, any gear in the cargo area, weight of all people in the car and any trailer tongue weight.
The required winch size is probably based on experience rather than the actual pulling force on the rope or cable. You're not really trying to lift the entire weight of the car off the ground. If you're winching up an incline you have gravity to work against. If you're stuck in mud or sand there's more force than the weight of the vehicle on flat ground. If you're pulling sideways to get your truck body away from a rock then the force is the weight (GVW) times a coefficient of friction, usually less than 1.0 and more likely around 0.5, or half the weight.

The curb weight of the 5th gen is listed at 4750 lbs. The op had his weight at 6300 lbs, 1550 lbs over curb weight ( you might think about lowering your weight at that point, that’s adding 3/4’s of a ton to your rig).

I've bolted 350 lbs of steel onto mine and got it weighed on a truck scale the other day with a full tank of gas. 5060 lbs exactly. I weigh 190 so that's 5250 lbs. I have an Engo 9000 Synthetic. It'll have to do. I do plan on picking up a couple of snatch pulleys too though. BTW I had to relocate the solenoid pack into the engine bay to make it fit.

I just started eyeballing winches. Thanks for this post. Nothing is better than than a list of add ons and an actual weight from a scale. From your post I can determine that an 8000 lb winch will suit my needs just fine especially if I throw a snatch block in my bag.
