Winch Size Recommendation

It’s 1.5 times the vehicle weight. 4runners aren’t 6300lbs normally.

A 10k is plenty even for a fat truck like mine.
Thank you, this is good information for people to hear.

...adding to the discussion:
Quote from the Warn website "How to choose the Right Winch":
"....For trucks, it's simple. Take the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) and multiply it by 1.5."
Google search: The GVWR (Gross vehicle weight rating) is 6,300 lbs. I confirmed this with some Toyota docs is correct for the 2014 4x4.

I have a Warn VR-10S Gen 2 on a C4 Fab Lo-Pro. No issues with fitment.
Thank you, good information as a 10,000 lb winch is likely where I'm headed. The big thing is that I have to get it right especially if getting involved in a group buy (hoping), its not like you can take it back and exchange it out.

Yes, the GVWR is different than the curb weight. Curb weight is around 5000#, IIRC. I don't have the spec's in front of me. The GVWR (GVW?) is about 1500# more than stock curb weight. This includes all mods, any gear in the cargo area, weight of all people in the car and any trailer tongue weight.
I'm not sure I totally follow. If the stock GVWR (GVW-same thing -- GOT IT, ITS NOT THE SAME, see below) is 6300 lbs, how does that include mods/gear/people/Etc. ? and yes, curb weight is 4800.

The required winch size is probably based on experience rather than the actual pulling force on the rope or cable. You're not really trying to lift the entire weight of the car off the ground. If you're winching up an incline you have gravity to work against. If you're stuck in mud or sand there's more force than the weight of the vehicle on flat ground. If you're pulling sideways to get your truck body away from a rock then the force is the weight (GVW) times a coefficient of friction, usually less than 1.0 and more likely around 0.5, or half the weight.
Sounds reasonable, not being an engineer, that experience plays a factor.

The curb weight of the 5th gen is listed at 4750 lbs. The op had his weight at 6300 lbs, 1550 lbs over curb weight ( you might think about lowering your weight at that point, that’s adding 3/4’s of a ton to your rig).
Remember that the math is done off GVWR (6300lbs) not curb weight (4800lbs).

I just started eyeballing winches. Thanks for this post. Nothing is better than than a list of add ons and an actual weight from a scale. From your post I can determine that an 8000 lb winch will suit my needs just fine especially if I throw a snatch block in my bag.
I think that 8000 lb is a little small considering information given, but I'm no expert by any means. Just going off Warn's recommendations. The snatch block puts another factor in there for consideration. Then there's the situational topics, experience, what the environment is, etc.

GVW is the actual gross vehicle weight, whereas GVWR is the rating applied to the vehicle, or a way of calculating the maximum the vehicle is intended to be loaded...bumpers, armor, etc. will raise your GVW, but not the GVWR

Got it better now, thank you.... sorry it was not clicking.... to dumb it down a little more for myself:

Gross Vehicle Weight RATING is the maximum ALLOWABLE weight of the vehicle. Gross Vehicle Weight is what it weighs NOW with everything on it including gear, mods, gas, people, and anything else loaded on it.

That being said, the math leads me to believe that a 9500 lb winch is adequate, and a 10,000 lb has a little more muscle (than necessary) for our Runners.... But then again, someone also suggested to consider the weight of your trailing buddies.

Thanks again for the clarification

ARB and Warn Winch

Does anybody know if the Warn VR-12S would fit in the ARB? Or know of what sizes fit in the ARB?
According to ARB they have test fitted only these- Warn 9.5XP, HS9500, XD9000.
